The saddest part of it all is that the words on the picture, kinda make you think that the guy had no talent anyway, and wanting to copy/redo someone else, is not easy, when you and the folks recording you, are not THEM, and they can not do what those other folks did.
In a sense, I don't find that sad. I find it stupid. That you think you can portray someone else, with other folks at the controls! We all can say thank you for the inspiration, but there is only one Tom Dowd, only one George Martin, and that is the way it should be. You can not duplicate "their" ear, and appreciation for music to the point that they can make a suggestion that enhances the material. But getting those suggestions through is tough, and even Bapu did not "get" or understand my own desire to have created a "cover" for the first song release, that was a compliment to Hipgnosis, and I'm OK with it, but it took away a "3rd dimension" to the band's music that I think would/could have demanded/requested more work, that would have given the band a few well deserved dollars for their time, instead of simply doing it as a hobby, since all of them have jobs!
I like to make suggestions, but in the end, as a DIRECTOR, it is the actors that have to live the part. You have to trust them and simply help them smooth out the edges and transitions so they are more "invisible" and the continuity of the work seems better and designed well. But this is hard, when folks say ... it doesn't sound like Nirvana! And that was a band that I stopped helping altogether here in Portland, because they did not even "know" their own music! Even though I told them that it had to sound like them, not Nirvana!
