MIDI notes are all doubled
I'm entering notes with a controller and they're all getting doubled. I've got Echo off in the Track View and 'Always Echo current MIDI track' off under Options > Global What else is there? Thanks - rev

Are the notes being entered twice in the Piano Roll view or staff view or are you just hearing it twice? Check all the other MIDI tracks's inputs that they're not also receiving data while you work on another track.

I'm just entering notes using a controller when the track is in Record mode. The controller is checked as an Input MIDI device only, it's the only MIDI device and I'm not overdubbing. Set Record, press keys, notes are doubled.

You confusing me with the word "entering",,I use that term for the manual entering of notes,, But I think you meant to say your "playing" a controller. Sorry to nit pick but that threw me off in the first post too. Anyhow have you ever used this controller before? What is the brand and is it USB or midi? Do you have another controller to try? Are you using input quantize? Sorry they are all questions instead of answers but you havn't supplied much info about what your doing. Steps I take { Insert Midi track - input echo with automatically be on. Set track input "omni" to Roland A49 Insert soft synth Set track output to that soft synth Record part. Edit and quantize

This is a key question, rev. It is an important distinction, and we need to know the answer. With input echo turned off, do you still hear sound? If so, that means another synth is being triggered. A prime suspect is the MS Wavetable Synth. It runs outside of Sonar, and you can't see it. Make sure it is not selected as a MIDI output device.

Bob and Greg: Only one MIDI Input device exists and only one is selected, no MIDI Output devices. Empty file, nothing in it at all. - Create a MIDI track assigned to TruePiano
- Arm the track, press R to Record
- Press plastic keys on my M-Audio Oxygen II controller
As I record, notes are audibly single but notes in the Staff View are visibly doubled. Playback is a little funky because TruePiano is unable to play two of the same note at the same time. There's no sound with Input Echo off, Cactus is right about that, it only enables you to hear the synth. Cactus: I take exactly the same steps as you, except after 'Record Part' I have doubled notes. There are no other soft synths, instruments, data or effects in the project. If the controller was on the blink, I'd expect random errors, no notes, tripled notes, wrong octave - but it reliably and consistently gives me two of the same. None of the knobs or sliders on the controller are assigned to software functions and one USB cable is all that's involved. I've used the controller for years without problems, this behavior is recent and new. Addendum: I am in Sound on Sound mode but the doubling happens when there's no preexisting data.

This is from the SONAR Home Studio 6 Help files: My Keyboard Doubles Every Note I Play When your keyboard doubles the notes, each note seems heavier or thicker than usual, as if two notes of the same pitch are emitted when you press the key. Also, you may find that you can play only half as many notes at one time before some of the held notes drop out. This can occur when MIDI echo is enabled. The keyboard plays the note for the key you've pressed. At the same time, the note is sent through the MIDI interface and echoed back to the keyboard, where it is played a second time. The best way to resolve the problem is to disable Local Control on the keyboard, following the instructions that came with the keyboard. This stops the keyboard from playing independently. The keys you play still produce sound on the keyboard because they are echoed back by the MIDI interface. In many cases, SONAR disables local control automatically when the program is started, but this is not always possible. It's also possible that your keyboard is transmitting information on two channels at once. To see if this is so, create a new project and record two notes from the keyboard. Then look at what you've recorded in the Event list view. If you see four notes displayed instead of two, then your keyboard is transmitting on two channels. See the documentation for your keyboard to learn how to correct the problem. Since echo is off, check your keyboard's settings.

>If you see four notes displayed instead of two, then your keyboard is transmitting on two channels. I played two and got four. Interestingly, the dupes have a velocity of 0 and they don't appear in the Staff View until I release the key. The Event List says all notes are coming from Channel 1 and a bunch of CC 109's are inserted. I don't think CC 109 is assigned to anything so I have no idea where they're coming from. This keyboard is just a dummy controller, I don't think it has a Local Control, but I'll check.

The audio interface isn't in the loop, the Oxygen goes straight to the computer via USB. I will endeavor to persevere with the manual.

Turn local off on the keyboard and enable echo in the track header.

Some specifics might help here. Make/model of controller. Is it going through a MIDI/USB adapter? General system specs. Your signature is a great place to put this info, so it is readily available for troubleshooting. That's why you see it in so many of our posts.

I'll make sure it's excluded by Sonar. I agree, I don't think it's broken. I'll try everything and post back.

The problem went away as mysteriously as it started. Everything is working properly and I have no explanation of how it happened. I did learn that you can see exactly what your controller is sending by installing a copy of midiox which can be found here: http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/ Under View, choose Data Monitor, then move your knobs and sliders and press keys. Any anomalies will show up in the Data Monitor View.
