NI Discovery: Cuba (Kontakt)
Are any of you using the NI Discovery: Cuba (for Kontakt). There is supposed to be a button to drag and drop the MIDI files associated with a patern to your DAW. I must be blind because I don't see it when I've got the plu-in running (or in stand-alone mode) nor in the screen shots of the manual or various articles/tutorials on-line. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated - Ron

There is nothing in the Cuba manual about this or a feature like that. you can sync pattern playback to host tempo DAW sync or just play the patterns and record into your DAW. I didn't see anything in the manual about draggin patterns to host as midi. the patterns are not midi files, the patterns are assigned to midi keys like key switches. I have only read the manual, I do not own Cuba library.

Thx Machine Claw. There are a variety of reviews on the web, e.g. in: http://en.audiofanzine.com/virtual-intrument-bundle/native-instruments/cuba/editorial/reviews/the-caribbean-touch.html That state: “On the lower part we find the different options to trigger a pattern (from Kontakt, or from the host, in any case the individual sounds are readily available), there are Sync and tempo options (the tempo can be increased or reduced by two), a menu to select the pattern, a button to extract it as a MIDI file (drag and drop), and there's also Edit, which opens a new window, as well as three knobs: Groove (related to the settings on Edit), Feel (beat type, between a robot-like and a more relaxed feel) and Intensity (to modify the overall dynamics).” I actually thought I saw it in the NI materials but cannot find it now. The patterns are encoded as MIDI and I can find them in the Instrument directory - I could ultimately just use those but they are a little bit of a PITA. I will also try changing the Kontakt options so that it exports the MIDI of the Kontakt scripting in real time and record that into another MIDI track - that also should reflect changes produced by some of the feel/randomization controls. But I was hoping that someone knew something about this "button."

Hey, guess what...no, go on, guess. You can indeed drag an drop midi into Sonar from Cuba. There's a little box just to the left of the edit button in the pattern box. Just click, hold and drag to your midi track. Done.

Thx, that is where it is supposed to be. Does that show up on all instrument/preset ensembles. I thought I saw it once then not. If you look in the PDF manual on Pg 14 there is a picture of the "Classic Rumba Ensemble" and (immediately) to the left of the Edit box there is nothing, that is what I see. Do you something has to be set a certain way in the Kontakt options to see it? I really appreciate your help - Ron

I just picked and ensemble (Cajon, I think) and loaded into Cuba. The little button was there and I drug the midi into Sonar. Would suspect it would only work with looped ensembles and not instruments which, of course, don't have midi loops. PS: maybe a Kontakt or Cuba update??

I just got a reply also on the NI Kontakt Forum that confirmed that button - and MIDI export is available only on the percussion instruments. The Tres [Cuban guitar], piano and bass [but not the trumpet] do have patterns ["montunos" for the tres & piano] and when I drag the MIDI files from the folder into Sonar it creates MIDI track at least labelled for all the those instruments, but playing them back is a mess because it generates some notes in the lower notes [assigned to trigger patterns]. I will play with this in the evening after work. I have been immersing myself in Cuban music lately and am writing some stuff. I will ultimately just play the tres/pno and bass parts myself, but for quick songwriting purposes it would have been nice just to drag those patters out to MIDI tracks. I know you can do a workaround by custom assigning the patterns to keys and triggering them with notes. I am looking into buyong a tres but will probably fake it for the moment with a 12 string guitar.
