Need headphone suggestions

I am thinking of getting some phones, in addition to my speakers at home, for if I need to keep things quiet. So what I'd like as something good sounding, pretty neutral, and comfy. My Denon D2000s at work are great, but of course they won't make those anymore. Also something high impedance would be nice because I'm going to nab a Fireface UCX I think and it has a 30 ohm output impedance on the headphones (for some reason).

So that's what I'm after. High impedance if possible, nice and comfy, good sound. Open/closed doesn't matter. I have some candidates in mind, just seeing what others like and recommend as well.

I have a small sampling of different headphones. For me the KRKs are the winner. Price is reasonable, they are the most comfortable (with no pressure on the ears - they designed them for long wear comfort).

Best of all, they capture for me anyway the range that sounds closest to listening to monitors. Not too bass heavy.

I have other headphones that have more bass and maybe more high range sparkle, so they make everything sound nice - even a bad mix of a song.

So the KRKs I think provide a truer real spectrum that helps increase my chance of getting a mix right.

ATHm50 by audia technica is onebof the better buys. Imho it outperforms headphones costing more.

I have the ATH M50'S and I like them but not near as much as my Beyer Dynamic DT 770 Pro's. The DT 770's come in different impedances. I have the 80 ohm ones and they work great.

I've been using the Ultrasone's Pro 750 for a couple of years now, and I'm very happy with their neutral & natural surround sound, very good sounding, as well as comfort-wise. I generally do my music work at night (when the little ones are sleeping) and barely notice any fatigue after a few hours of use.

Here are some of the specs:

    • S-Logic™ Natural Surround Sound
    • Dynamic principle
    • Frequency range 8-35.000 Hz
    • Impedance 40 Ohm
    • Sound pressure level 94 dB
    • MU Metal bufferboard, reduced field emissions in accordance with ULE (=Ultra Low Emission) standard
    • Driver 40 mm titanium-plated
    • Weight 295 g (without cord)

    Ps.
I also use it for gaming and the clarity of pin-pointing the locations of (surround) sounds are quite remarkable.

I have the Ultrasone 750's also.  Fantastic Bass, scooped mids, and very bright top end.  They sound closer to monitors than most any other headphones, which make them great for placing microphones and live tracking.  But trying to mix with them may make the results somewhat dull due to the exaggerated high frequencies. They are also not as flattering as standard headphones for clients on location.

ATHM50 are probably the most popular closed back phones today, they have a very clear, dynamic, and flattering sound. I really liked the sound of my Yamaha RH10ms before they broke.  Clients' jaws dropped at the results of their recordings with them.

The ucx has a cheap headphones eq preset setting I use often in my output bus.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

In the 1980's, I bought a STAX Lambda Pro. I have used it ever since, very frequently.

The headset is comfortable, the lining has not degraded, it still sounds wonderful. Clean, analytic, fast. It always helps to keep the subwoofers on, because you miss the deep bass body feel with any headphones. Maybe some day we will get the full body headphone?!

It cost me a bundle - about $800, I think, back then, but I have never regretted the purchase.

I'm sure this version has been superseded by many other versions - but I thought I'd put in a good word for the product line.

The headphone amp is Class A and provides the necessary high voltage for the electrostatic membranes.

Summary: expensive, but worth every penny.

I just picked up a set of beyerdynamic DT880s. They are open back in design and wear rather well over hours of work.  The sound is closer to reference quality than some and the soundstage fairly wide for my ears.  They don't color the bass frequencies which for me, is something I chose to work on this year in my mixes.  I am getting a lot better at correct levels and mixing the bass guitars, synths and bass drums so I can distinctly hear each of them.  Another thing that I liked about them - when I try a mastering toolset that includes stereo\mono enhancement and limiting, I can really hear the most minute of changes in the stereo field, throughout the frequency curve.  A disclaimer of sorts -   We have some really talented folks on this forum, and I am about middling to average.

I have those as well. It was ear opening when I switched to KRKs as my primary headphones. Helped my mix process enormously to move away from the Sony ones, which sound great but deceive mix-wise.
