Studio mystery...Solved (last post)
We've got an audio mystery in our VoiceOver suite. Running Sonar 8.5 on a (gasp) XP machine...because it works. No external routing has been changed...no switches accidentally flipped or knobs accidentally turned. As far as we can tell nothing has been changed at all. Only now the playback of audio exported to the desktop is about 3 to 4 db quieter than inside Sonar prior to export. For lo these many years it was the same. The Windows settings are unchanged and Sonar's settings are unchanged. Or are they? So why the sudden drop in playback?? Likely culprits we might be overlooking??

Are you running a control surface? Just wondering. I have faderport, and every once in a while, when I open a project, the fader(on the faderport) doesn't move to the saved position in Sonar. Instead, the fader in Sonar will drop down to whatever position the faderport's fader happens to be in. Had me scratching m head for quite a while before I discovered what was causing the volume to drop. Anyway, I reinstalled the drivers and the problem stopped.

Nope...just a little 8 channel mixer which serves as a router more or less.

The "Cut Volume In Half" button was accidentally pushed in? Is there any way something on the desktop was doubling the track output previously? The fact that it IS double is what makes it curious...

An intriguing mystery. Fly me out to your place and put me up at the Radisson and I'll bet I can figure it out. Or, you could just turn up the master 3dB and chalk it up to cosmic rays.

You have a poltergoooost. Forget Dave's offer, fly me over instead and I'll perform the necessary exorcisms and demon out-castings. I will, of course, require an endless supply of naked virgins and altar wine to sustain me during this onerous task (I will provide my own ritual daggers and cheese-flavoured condoms).

Welp...today I had some time to really troubleshoot this and it didn't take all that long to find and fix the problem. Turns out...natch...I was wrong: something had been changed. How or by who is still a mystery. But the Windows "wave" volume slider was down. Simple as that. The mystery is I am the only one currently who uses that box and I have never, ever opened up that dialog and changed the position of that fader. And, if they are to be believed, neither has anyone else here. Go figure. In any case it's all fixed now. I figured it would just take a little sleuthing. Sorry Bit, had to cancel your room at the Embassy Suites.

There are quite a few applications that will reset the Windows volume without any human assistance. if any programs were run on your computer that might explain this, even though no one would have any recollection of manually making the change. Communications software like Skype etc. can be instructed to do that via a setting in system sound under communication tab, but games and other applications that you would not expect to do anything often do. At times I find Windows sound muted w/o anyone touching it, so anything's possible.
