Sonar X3e and Z3TA-2.1 64-bit Crashing

I've posted before about this and I've been in touch with CW tech support, but the problem still persists.

I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit, sp1 with 16GB RAM.  I've got Sonar X3e installed (64-bit).  I have about 11 plugins, including Dimension Pro, Ozone, Massive, Reaktor, Kontakt and others, most of which are 64-bit and they're running fine.  Even a 32-bit synth, Tera, is running fine under JBridge.

But when I install Z3TA-2.1 64 bit it crashes Sonar after a few minutes.   The 32-bit version works fine, but I can't dock it.  And, when Sonar crashes, I can't get it out of memory for about 10 minutes, even when I try to end the process using the Task Manager...

I've tried:

1.  Uninstalling Z3TA multiple times (and cleaning out all registry entries as advised)
2.  Turning off the network adapter and Microsoft Security Essentials
3.  Adjusting Sonar parameters in the audio configuration file
4.  Submitting dump reports to CW
5.  Reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables as per CW advice
6.  Prayer to the Digital Deities

Everything else is working fine--no other problems other than some known minor bugs with effective workarounds.

Any suggestions?

p.s.  I also installed Z3TA-2.1 64-bit on another machine with Sonar X3e installed.   It too crashes after a while, it is the only thing that makes that machine crash too.  Also, this problem has persisted through several older versions of Sonar, including X2 and earlier versions of X3.

Thanks for any help that might come.

What is the full error message under the Windows event viewer?
Would be nice to have some details about your hardware spec as well in detail (see my signature).
Please also run windows update several times and look at also installing the optional updates.

    Thanks

Never had it crash on me and have no idea how to avoid the crash. To dock a 32bit plug-in, hold the SHIFT key when opening the plug-in UI. This will force the display of the standard VST header for the 32bit plug-in, usually behind the plug-in UI. The VST header may be docked.

Thanks for the tip regarding docking a 32-bit plugin .  I'll try it.

Please run the universal audio installer, and universal midi installer here:
    http://www.motu.com/download

There is also a firmware update for your MIDI Express XT to install here as well.

Also please do a VST reset.

When testing create a new project and make sure you don't select a template (do not use the default template)

I much appreciate your help Alex, but are you just guessing in terms of solutions this this issue?  Do you have experience with this issue and do you work for Cakewalk or another software company?  I'm certainly not trying to belittle or dismiss any expertise you have, but I am a busy professional  musician and don't want to waste time or, worse, create new instabilities or problems.

    Thanks,

I have been in many different IT jobs for over 20 years, and have a degree in IT and have worked in Silicon Valley, not that it particularly matters. I've also been a sound engineer. I do not work in Cakewalk but I've been troubleshooting in these forums for some time now.

What you have here is a crash that others are not experiencing, therefore I'm thinking that it is likely there are other external factors involved. Updating drivers/firmware and windows update often resolves stability issues. Dodgy drivers/firmware can crash anything, even specific behaviour with specific software and plugins. The event viewer BTW is not pointing to a specific DLL which adds more fuel to the fire.

You can always roll back drivers if you really want to.

Please try #6, the VST reset has resolved issues like this in the past as well. I have no other suggestions right now. You need to rule this out as a factor. You have supplied no smoking gun.

    > Also, this problem has persisted through several older versions of Sonar, including X2 and earlier versions of X3.

And the common factor with all these is that you are probably using the same drivers, or the same old projects? I also recommended testing with a new project without the default template to cover this scenario.

    Cheers.

I'm certainly going to try the VST reset.  The thing that causes me to believe it isn't a driver issue, is that I have Z3TA-2.1 64 bit also installed on my office machine, also Win7 64 with Sonar X3e installed (64), this particular computer is not configured for digital audio and it has a different sound card, motherboard, memory chips and graphics card than my DAW.  Z3TA is also crashing on this machine, no other Sonar problems, like on my DAW.

This has been an ongoing mystery and if I weren't so compulsive-obsessive I'd just use the 32-bit version and be happy.  After all, it does everything the 64-bit version does (now that I was told how to dock it) and there's no difference in sound quality.  Memory constraints are not an issue with a soft synth that uses very little memory in the first place.

    Thanks again!

Understand what you are saying about it crashing across other computers, your conclusions with this recent information make sense. But I would still try it anyway, you can always roll back drivers, you have nothing to lose and it has resolved these sort of issues in the past.

What you are really looking at:

    a) Windows update resolves it inc optional windows updates (you already did it).
    b) VST reset resolves it.
    c) Driver/firmware updates resolves it.
    d) Something odd in the actual project (e.g. corrupted project, a plugin on the master bus you forgot about). Try to reproduce the issue in new projects without the default template.

I doubt very much it is a buffers issue but you could try boosting them (inc MIDI buffers), and muck around with your ASIO latency or whatever. That's not what I'd look at first though.

That's it really. Only other advise is always have a backup strategy.
    Cheers
    Alex
