Since RAM is everything....

I've noticed that the RAM prices have actually gone up since I built my rig back in June of 2013.

I bought 2x8Gb sticks for $129 and now they're $166 HERE and a bit more HERE.

Aren't they supposed to coming down in prices (at regular intervals)??

I have noticed over the last 20 years or so that there seems to be an ebb and flow to ram prices. They'll most likely come down again soon.

Well, I'm not sure if they will or will not come down........I looked around a bit and found this: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-09-23/chip-prices-reach-two-year-high-after-sk-hynix-fire-in-china.html
So, it looks like things will have to depend on how well things are going on in the East and how long this honeymoon is going to last.

There are application out there which will put your RAM on overnight test.

I'm not sure RAM is everything. I have 16Gb but I never use more than 8Gb (5Gb on average) even with tons of Kontakt, Reaktor and other heavy stuff going on. I feel better that I have more but I rarely use all of it. Video work with other software however is a different matter.

When I started in the computer business, an 8 MB board cost $16,000. Yes, that's an "M", not a "G".

Kilobytes not Megabytes back when.
But they do not want to read you or have you talk except to your computer in the future.

This is what happens when you don't place your hands on the home row before typing, while watching a video on the other display. You don't think I actually pay any attention to what I type in the CH, do you?

The USA Today proudly stated this weekend that PC sales improved. If that's the case, the price of RAM went up, hard drives doubled, video cards picked up $50 dollars, sound cards picked up $50 dollars, and the new USB plug just went up to $35 dollars! Ohhh, that same Dell monitor just showed up on the Dell costing $45 dollars more!

What do you expect? This is America!

Especially with tax breaks and unfair competition. If you make rules to prevent it it's deemed anticompetative. Rock on globalisation!

We need some globalization! The problem is that big cities like NY, LA, London, Paris, Rome and Tokyo, don't want it ... why? Because they are the ones that will lose "profits", while everyone else stands to win more.

In the end, the disparity is about hugeness against smallness. Working for a cable company, one of the things that you learn real quick is how $20 is so meaningless in NY, but $20 in Medford is almost 3 hours of work for a kid ... how the heck do you expect people to get HBO? And those small towns helping pay for those big numbers is a drain to the rest of America!

What do you mean we are already 80% plus globalized. Small business are screwed paying taxes large corps don't have to pay and most people are on slave wages. Don't want it? We already have it in Europe and yes the US is screwed as well.

Cable companies and telephone companies monopolies everywhere. Star Bucks and massive budget chains everywhere which nobody can compete with on a small level. Massive supermarket stores everywhere. Low wages high taxes. Pilots flying who have to claim food stamps... Oh a great success...

Does it matter to you what brand of RAM you use? I usually go with Crucial but I have used Kingston and Corsair with no trouble. I wonder if it is all made by the same company or if Crucial makes its own and Kingston makes its own.

You guys who know about this. What is your opinion on different brands.

Speed, size and pricing is all that really matters to me.

Always try to pair them up with same brand and model (whatever you are using).
Mix/match different brand/models together at your peril.
