So called "nerd" culture has kind of hit the mainstream so while the stereotypical hardcore Trekkies are still out there even the conventions and chatrooms are less extreme dweebo fests than they used to be. You'll probably even see a bunch of girls hanging around!

As much as it seems like society is getting stupider I think in reality we are all getting smarter through technology and just notice the inherent stupidity of humanity more.

I've just added the first DS9 novel to my basket - The Lives of Dax.

First the novels, then what? How long before I start wearing a communicator badge and get an e-mail address @starfleet.com?

Am I friend with these guys now?

Incidentally, the documentary called Trekkies and its sequel are well worth watching. Both are available on Netflix IIRC.

That Douglas Marcks fellow would make any trekkie look pretty normal by comparison.

Plus, where else are you going to see a Klingon Metal band? :P

Well I neglected to include my thoughts on how it has also seemed to focus and reinforce the stupidity of some. Like groups of dumb people with dumb ideas finding other like minded dumb people to feed their confirmation biases and share stupid paradigms an isolated dumb person likely would not have found/concluded on their own.

One village idiot is pretty harmless. Large, organized groups of them can be rather dangerous.

Unfortunately, this happens often, however they obviously don't realize that they are all idiots.  They simply compare themselves favorably to that one guy is even dumber than the rest.

And after a season and a half of Voyager, I suddenly realize that the series seems to be missing one thing that's part of every other series and even the movies - humour.

As dark as it was, Deep Space Nine had me laughing out loud on a few occasions and smiling quite regularly. The Next Generation and the original series also had funny moments - nothing to roll on the floor, but enough to make you smile.

I do like the show so far, but to me, it's more of the same, without the fun parts. I've not yet grew fond of any characters either.

IMHO, DS9 had the strongest cast of characters - not just the usual core team of federation reps and good guys, but others like Garak, Gol Dukat, Kai Winn, Quark - and even Rom - Gowron...

Yeah, what little humor is to be had is of the REALLY corny variety and there are a couple characters that are just tiresome. However the relationship between Tuvak and Neelix gets pretty smirk worthy after a while. Especially on the Tuvak end of things. He's a smarmy prick and it made me chuckle.

A season and a half in is still when I find it kind of "meh". It gets better soon. Not mind blowing but pretty cool.

Star Trek is one of those things I could just never get into. Don't know why - the concept of it sounds inherently interesting to me and I always wanted to like it.

Back in the early to mid 90's (stoner days) I had friends who would never miss an episode of TNG. And try as I did to get into it, my eyes would eventually gloss over and I'd spend the whole episode looking through the screen thinking stoned thoughts (often dirty ones). I did kind of like that low pitched rumble sound which ran through the whole thing though. Sounded great on a home theater sub.

I keep looking at the post dates to make sure this isn't a necro'd thread but apparently not.

I like TOS, TNG and some of the DS9 episodes. I never liked Voyager much. I tried but it just didn't snap. I still watched because of being a ST fan plus 7-of-9 was easy on the eyes. Like with all the series though some episodes were better than others.

Enterprise had some good eps too. It was good for a lot of the history and back story, that is until Abrams blew it all up.

I liked the SW movies too.

You can always buy this stuff if you want to spend the money on it like some people do.

Even from Warlymart with some of them.

Cakewalk - A division of Gibson Brands.

Ah, avatars still can not be uploaded.

As long as I can watch them legally online, I'm not enough of a Trekkie to buy the box sets.  Anyway, I prefer to buy "virtual" collections, from iTunes whenever the option is available.

I'm hoping it'll be the case for the Batman 1966 seres, due out on my wife and I's wedding anniversary. Holy coincidence, Batman!

Now THAT is something I've been waiting for. Hopefully, it'll be released on iTunes eventually, like the old 'incredible Hulk" series.

That is tempting. I collect TV shows from 50's and 60s.   I've collect the all of the Dark Shadows episodes. It's over 30 DVD box sets.

I watched the last two episodes of Deep Space Nine last night.

It's hard to believe just how much I disliked it at first and how it ended up being one of my favorite shows ever.

I guess it's time to move on to Voyager. I'm sure I'll hate it for a couple of episodes and it'll probably grow on me after a while.

But, alas, no Worf...

I forgot how it ended. Wasn't it more supernatural than sci-fi.  I think Netflix has DS9.

Those STNG movies were lame.  The ones with the original cast are still great to watch. Lots of humor.  BTW the new ones are pretty good.

Re: I can't believe it's over! 2014/09/01 20:13:07 (permalink)
3 seasons and a half in.

I'm digging my daily Star Trek fix.

The doctor brings in a touch of humour which was so far missing.

But as I was watching last night, I realized that I didn't care for any of the characters.

Janeway - Nope. And she has the most annoying voice.
Tuvok - Nope.
Chakotay - Nope. Furthermore, he's supposed to be an indian but he sounds just like Spanish Lieutnant Batista in Dexter.
B'elanna - Could be interesting.
Neelix - I get that he's one of the ingredient from the recipe, but I just can't care for him much.
Tom Paris - same thing. Seems like a pseudo Riker.
Harry - Well, they do like to make him suffer. But that's it.

Compared to TOS, TNG - and even more DS9 which had of all the most extraordinary cast of well developed characters, even the secondary occasional ones like Rom...

It really seems a bit bland. But it's a daily fix...
