Custom Key bindings

Yesterday I was working on a new project and none of my key bindings was working. I looked in preferences and saw that all the key bindings I had assigned were still there bonded the way I wanted them to be. But none of them was responding the way I wanted them to. So I went to look for my Cakewalk .ini file and could not find it. I looked where it's default location is suppose to be and it ain't there. I did a search and came up with nothing.

Anyone have something like this happen?

The Cakewalk.ini should be in C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Version. AppData is a hidden directory. it can be restored (with factory settings) by holding the SHIFT key while opening SONAR.

The custom shortcuts are not stored in Cakewalk.ini though. They are stored in the registry. For example, X3 Producer shortcuts are stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X3\Bindings

    Thanks for the reply scook.

I always have "Show Hidden Files" checked. And I already had looked where you suggested. I thought it might be there. That's where I found the TTSseq.ini and Audio.ini files.

Didn't think they were registry entries though. I'll take a look and see if they are there.

Let me ask you this, when you go to Pref/Ini file are you seeing anything in the box? Or is it blank?

It is blank by default. Cakewalk.ini is stored with TTSSEQ.INI and AUD.INI. Holding SHIFT while starting SONAR should copy the master Cakewalk.ini from C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\SONAR version into the user directory.

It does not explain why the bindings are acting the way they are. I do not have many custom bindings and have not had problems with them. Were they imported during installation ? Do they fail consistently? If so, I would consider clearing them out and entering them again in the current version of SONAR. FWIW, during installation I have been allowing SONAR to configure based on previous installations but have read this is not recommended (at least Noel does not recommend it which is good enough for me).

Yes always imported past configurations. But when I started using the X series, I abandoned my old key bindings, so no old key bindings were imported. (And I saw what Noel said about importing old settings too. I won't do that anymore!)

Didn't come up with a new idea for my old key bindings until about three or four months ago when I read that someone has their key bindings on the number pad. So I came up with a scheme, binded them and it worked until recently.

Yes they are not working at all. This was my "work around" idea also. Just didn't know where to look for them. As I said, Sonar is still showing all keys binded the way I want.

I am sure you know, it is not necessary to edit the registry to clear out custom bindings. Use the keyboard shortcuts UI in preferences to unbind individual bindings, zap entire views or zap all custom bindings.

Thanks for looking out for me. All I wanted to do with Registry was to look at it and see what was there.

Well I unbinded all my settings. Re-started X3. Re-binded the keys, and it still does the same thing.

At least SONAR is consistent ATM. With more detail there may be a solution.

Update. I got it working. Don't really know what I did, but I did make the earlier attempt in post #8.

Then I went to the Registry and saw that there was still eleven bindings there. So I restarted X3, went to my bindings, and pressed "Zap All Bindings." It asked if I wanted to do this, I answered yes. I then went to Registry and saw all eleven bindings were gone. (all except the three defaults ones. They were still there.)

Restarted X3 and went back and redid the key bindings and now it works. I'm a happy camper. : )

So not sure what happened or why. I will update if anything changes.
