Yard sale find...

Got a bass amp. A Gallien-Krueger 400RB Mark-IV 2x10 combo. It looks perfect but needs repair. Since I got it for 20 bucks... I figured it was worth the risk, I bet I can fix it. He also had some sort of Crate bass amp, looked like a 4x10 and an old Peavey SS PA head. I didn't look close at it but it looked like 5 or 6 channels, not a board but a head configuration. It was cheap too, I probably should have pied it up too.
The guy mentioned that he has his dads Gretsch Country Gentleman and is thinking of selling it. He said his 5 string bass had a loose input jack, I think I'll fix it for him and buy the Peavey PA head... if he sold the G-K combo for 20 bucks who knows.. maybe he will sell the Gretsch for cheap too.
Anyone interested in a Crate bass amp, probably 4x10 SS, I think I can get it for 25 bucks, or the Peavey PA head for that matter.

The G-K is this one: I hope I can fix it. I'll try a new power cord first, I have a bad full of extra power cords. I cannot seem to find a fuse but I'll open it up if I can't get it to go.
I am grateful for any ideas..

I guess I need to restring my Alembic Squire Bronco!

Thanks!
Julien

Thanks Rain. I'll let you know how the fixin' goes. I hope it is easy. I wonder how it sounds with a guitar, good I bet. It's a sexy amp.

It's a nice find if just the speakers work.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

It isn't too bad, it has side handles... but I was thinking about wheels too.

@Drew, I was thinking that too. The cab and speakers are worth more than 20 bucks.

I think this is the Peavey PA head he had for 30 bucks.

I had a garage sale once, but afterwards I was forced to park my car on the street...

Nice Jbow! My brother used to always keep his eye out at garage sales for me. One time he picked up a 1970-ish Acoustic 370 bass head for $25, in mint condition! I remember reading that Billy Cox and other heavyweights of the era used that amp. The thing is a monster, and I've still got it. I see them go for around $500 on eBay now. What a deal! He also bought me a 1974 Roland SH-3 synthesizer with a little fire damage on the case for $15!

I still have my '59 Gretsch amp. Don't know the exact model though. It's got 2-12's, and a guitar, bass, and accordion input. Oh, and a wicked tremelo section.

It isn't the mute button. I think it is something in the input, maybe the jack. The mute button pops pretty loud when I press it, some of the pots crackle, and if I turn up the volume and master I get a pretty good hiss from the speakers, so something from the amp is hitting the speakers, just nothing from the instrument. I'm going to pull the chasis and take a look.

Been there done that... more than a tingle though, lol. We had the old SM-57 hinged pistol mics and I don't remember what they were running through. It was outside, it was the 60s, it went ZZZAAAAPP on my lip. It will make you stop touching the mic with your mouth!

Zap-- when dat used to happen my tail will go straight and I cannot sit for a few hours..

The Peavy will sound bad for singing but I used to use that thing for a guitar amp and it has a spring reverb good for making thunder sound..

I pulled the chassis, pulled all the knobs and input nuts and removed the front PCB. I couldn't find anything that was loose or looked burnt. I still think it is in the input because the amp puts a good hiss through the speakers if I max the level and master, even more if I turn up the EQ section, everything a 12:00 and it is quiet... all that is normal, but I get nothing from the input jack. I would replace it but it is a black plastic affair soldered right to the PCB, it's nothing like a traditional input jack.
I plan to take it to Wizard Electronics in Atlanta to see if it can be fixed without too much cost. I don't know what else to do.
