I've got the 25 key version and it is automapped.  Keys and drum pads work.  I haven't tried any of the knobby/fader things since I have a touchscreen.  But the Keys and pads are high-quality if that makes a difference to you.

I was just checking this out about an hour ago at the Guitar Center.  VERY solid - I am sure it will work fine, as they have been at this for quite some time, with a great reputation.

If there is no predefined mapping, there is always ACT.

Can anyone reply if this MIDI controller Novation Impulse 61 works with the Sonar ACT function? And if so, how difficult is it to operate/work?

I am a 'newbie' getting into the MIDI controller/keyboard thing and am looking for the best possible "starter" MIDI keyboard.

    Thanks.

It is a good keyboard controller, as above.

Novation has their own controller software - it uses automat instead of ACT.  It automatically maps the controllers to features on DAWs and synths and effects.  I'd use it instead.  I tried not to load it but it ended up with it on my computer.  It works find, although I'm using a touch screen for many things.  But Automap works out of the box for many features.

The only caveat that I would point out about Automap and Sonar is that Automap will control plug ins, but it will not control the Pro Channel (I haven't tried it in a while, but I have never seen anything in Automap release notes that would make me think that has changed).

The sliders and buttons on the left side work well, and the knobs on the right side can be put into mixer mode which make them into pan controllers.

To control the Pro Channel, you will need to ACT map the knobs.  This works when the knobs are in MIDI mode.  Only downside with the knobs in MIDI mode is that the Impulse transmits them as CCs.  In ACT mode, the knobs act as rotary controllers so a right twist increments the current value at the plugin.  In MIDI mode, you will see a jump when you twist a knob as the plugin catches up to where the Impulse is.  (this is common to any device that sends CCs, not an Impulse problem).

Don't ask the question if you cannot live with the answer.

Whichever midi controller you decide to get, there's also this plugin developed by one of our users here: http://forum.cakewalk.com/You-can-integrate-your-Control-Surface-with-SONAR-as-deep-as-you-want-m3125708.aspx

I've downloaded it, but have had a chance to install and use it (yet)......others seem very happy with it.
