Cover: Flight of Icarus

I did a cover of Flight Of Icarus with my online friend, Jim Miller. He is "7th" on Soundcloud. I played the guitars and bass and used AD1 for the drums.

Enjoy!

Overall it sounds pretty good and appropriate for the style - the vocals are kicking.

The only thing I didn't care for were the drums which sounded a bit "boxy" to me.   Perhaps a more "live" kit?

Robert, I went to YouTube and heard the original version after hearing yours, and I'm impressed by how much of the essentials you captured in this version.  The vocals are especially challenging, but you hung in there.  The rest of it has that same rockin' attitude as the original.  It wasn't easy, but you did a good job.

    All the best,

    Thanks guys!

I think the drums for this are thin but they aren't much more than that for the original. The singer, Jim (7th on Soundcloud), seems made for this band. I'm working on a Queensryche song with him and his voice may suit that singer more so than Iron Maiden.

    Thanks again for listening.

Hey Robert , overall very nice …your friend Jim has some serious vocal Pipes
I havent listened to anything like this in a while and it was a nice refreshing change of pace for me ..
your guitars sound great man  if they sounded any better you would need to throw your stones over your shoulder and hire a guy with a wheelbarrow to wheel them around for you

I left a comment on SC as well.....love the energy and talent in this song. To my ears the guitars need a small amount of sheen..it could be my ears though:)

Awesome. Very true to the original and the guitar tones are fantastic. The singer does a damn fine Bruce too.

I'll concur with Steve that the drums, particularly the toms, need a little something but it actually reminds me of how the drums sound on Number of the Beast (which isn't a bad thing).

The vocals are great but there are a couple spots that could maybe use a little pitch correcting (ever so slight). Especially during the harmonies so it gets that nice cohesive blend going on. This stuff is CHALLENGING (I know because I've sang a lot of Dickinson before and my old band used to cover quite a bit of their material) so the fact he got it as good as he did is very impressive but I'd imagine even The Bruce himself had a bit of tuning help in the studio (which seems more likely when you hear their live stuff which can be quite off at times).

The only other thing is, and this may be my headphones, but I was getting kind of a lo fi kind of hiss/lack of crispness. It's like how my last song turned out... just... not crisp. I'm wondering if Soundclouds compression method does something nasty to heavy music like this because a lot of the cleaner stuff doesn't seem to suffer that.

But that really is nitpicky stuff because otherwise I think it's perfect and honestly after not listening to the original for a few years if it weren't for those things I'd probably think it WAS the original.

Absolutely well done and thanks for bringing the METAL!!!

I think you're hearing what I'm hearing but I think it's an overall lack of that little bit of extra clarity. From what I can tell the guitar tones are almost EXACTLY like the Maiden sound... just everything has a bit of a haze over it.

    Thanks for the comments everyone!

I don't like using pitch correction. I have a hard enough time editing the audio with my eyesight. I don't plan on fixing anything in this track but I will file the notes away for further mixing as my guitar tones don't change. I just use the emulated line out from my Blackstar HT-5.

Maybe my ears are tired after three hours of mixing but it all sounded very mid-range to me. Almost like how it sounds when accidentally leave ARC on when I export.

You know Ed, your comment made me check. The guitar's output was set to my AI rather than the master. So I am going to revisit the mix and fix it.
