I just went back and read your original post. I believe I misread it. All of the steps I had just posted (and just removed) suggested that you create essentially a clone of the 1st project, but I did not realize until reading your post again that there were a bunch of tracks and data already present in the 2nd project.
I don't really know of a better way of accomplishing what you are trying to do, other than to do what I think you did - save off the drum tracks as a track template, then insert into the 2nd project and then load them up with the clips.
Hopefully someone will have a better way for you.
Sorry for any confusion - I think I will take my nap now, and see if I think any more clearly after that. :)
