Setting up Sonar X3 with Dual Displays?

Hey there, long time Cakewalk user here. I just made the jump from Sonar 6 Producer to Sonar X3 Producer. I'm a bit overwhelmed by all of the new stuff, but slowly learning it.

I have a few really annoying setup/configuration issues I'd like to tackle though, and I don't think they're Producer Edition specific, so I figured this would be the place to ask for help.

First off, I'm running this on a dual monitor setup. How do I change the default screenset on Sonar so that it spans across both monitors by default when I open a new project? Specifically, I like having the prochannel and console mixer on the right, and the track view on the left. I want this to be how it's configured by default, on every subsequent project I open, from now until forever. How do I do this? I've tried "saving" the "current screenset" and I've tried "locking" it as well, but whenever I open a new project it just resorts back to how it was.

Dragging the application across both windows prohibits me from arranging things in a way that makes any sense to me, so I've been undocking things and dragging them across, but this is an obnoxious thing to have to do for every single project I open.

I feel like this should be simple,  but I cannot, for the life of me, figure it out.

Thanks,

- Matt

I like my display just like you do. The only way I know of to get it to start that way is to create a project template. Actually I saved a project called "Template". It's got BFD3 already loaded, a couple synths, and like 30 tracks that are already labeled bass, guitar, lead guitar, lead vox, backing vox, etc. Those tracks are already routed to their respective busses. Everything is all set up for me, and it's already got track view on one monitor, and console/browser/piano roll view on the other monitor. I start every new song by opening this project. It's very convenient. Hope this helps.

    Ahhh fabulous tip! Thank you!

I knew it would be something simple.

Now the real trick is... how do I have that be the default/auto-selected template... well other than renaming it "Normal" or whatever.

I find that when I launch Sonar, the main Sonar window always opens to wherever it was before I last closed it, regardless of screensets. Also, changing screensets does not alter the position or size of the main window. I presume that X3 behaves the same as X2.

I keep Sonar permanently stretched across the width of 2 screens.

I am not familiar with where SONAR saves its default template pointer (if it even does). I just checked the documentation and it suggests resaving the Normal template (second paragraph in that).

You could easily work around this by renaming the Normal template to another name and putting your own in its place.

Just as a side note, multiple monitors does not work as well when the monitors have different resolutions.  One place this is required is for full screen mode across multiple monitors.

How do you guys deal with stretching across 2 monitors? I find that to be awkward. The command bar being crossing monitor boundaries drives me nuts for example. I end up using the second monitor for opening VSTs, etc.

I feel the same way. I cannot handle a window that spans screens... however, you just made me think of something I used to use in older versions of Windows... the "virtual desktop" where you could have very high application resolutions and scroll the display all over. That would be a nice feature of SONAR on smaller screens if (made) available.

But like you, I default to an entire window on a single screen and adjust "what is where" with screen sets.

I just maximize the Multidock onto the second monitor and use it that way. Whatever opens in the multidock opens there - console, piano roll, matrix... works for me!

Hello guys, I have a similar problem. I've just bought second 4K display and my mouse can't operate on any Sonar's original windows ( it sets all values to maximum everytime I try to drag them). When I put a window on my first display it works well, even when I split f.e. Inspector window into two monitors - left side works bad, and right side (on primary display) wors ok. I have to mention that I used to have another (full HD) display yesterday and it was ok. Refresh rate change didn't help. Logitech drive also, what the hell? DO you have any ideas where to look?

That's a symptom of the magnification set to a value greater than 125%.
