Weird-can't get Sonar X3 to be the default program for my files

Project files open based on the registry entry
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CakewalkProjectFile\shell\open\command

Just run the X3 installer again and it should return to being the default.  Just unclick all of the options except for the program itself so as not to potentially mess up any current settings.
 
The same thing happened to me where X1 was the default after I'd reinstalled it.

Try shift + right click on the file otherwise get into the reg hacking. Ta.

Thank you. Went there. But under default programs there is no Sonar to be found. Am I missing something? Under default programs, the only option in the pull down menu is set default programs and there is no cakewalk or sonar.

Ok, it's come to this. I did recently re-install X1 to get V-vocal back, so I guess that is the problem. Thank you for your insight.

I am not quite clear now about what you are trying to do. 
If it is to have your current version of Sonar automatically look in the right place to find your projects etc., then the registry hack or the file folder locations dialogue is the place to start:

If you want to open your cwp file in your latest version of Sonar, then you have missed something. You need to go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations find the cwp extension in the list click/highlight it, click the "change program" button in the upper right to open the "choose the program..." window, click the "browse" button in the lower right of that window and then navigate to the Sonar(whatever version).exe file where it is installed on your hard drive. Click/highlight the Sonar executable file then click the "open" button in the lower right to open the "open with" dialogue window, highlight the Sonar file if it is not already selected and then click OK. If you do not see any file extensions (.exe etc.) it is because Windows is hiding this useful knowledge from you to "protect" you from yourself. Switch to details view and select the appropriately named file of the type "application."
 

I will run the X3 installer again, after which I will run X3e.
 
I went through all of the registry place where SONARPDR.exe appeared, and did not find anything there that looked like it would point X2 to open midi files, but that's what happens on my machine, so there must be some other mechanism in place - OR I missed it.  I of course found lots of mentions of X2 and X3 in the registry, but nothing that looked like a place to tweak successfully, so, as noted above, I will just run the X3 and X3a program installers only, to set midi files to open with X3e.
 
Any how - as I am typing this, my brain keeps shutting down, so first will come a long nap.

Hi CakeAlexS. Thank you for your post. Concerning CJ, 1st of all, these are 2 separate problems. Re-installing X3 would not have brought V-vocal back. That was the problem in the other thread I was looking to solve. 2nd of all, if you read that post again you will see accusations of RTFM. Giving the wrong advice, coupled with telling me that if I would read the manual like I should have all would be ok, with the addition of "its not always what you say, but how you say it", I would say I was quite ok in my response. That's my take on it.

Sorry but he was quite correct. You shouldn't have reinstalled X1 to get vvocal back, and as a result you are in the current situation. I don't see any problems refering to readme files either, that's actually a pretty sensible thing to do when installing software.

Ironically it may be a good idea to reinstall X3 now you've installed X1 (that is debatable though).

Anyway the full detail as I pointed out to you was in my last post on that thread so I won't go into any more specifics here.

You just run X1 setup and just select vvocal if you have X3 already installed (no need to install X1), check it's in the vst file path then rescan. That's all you need to do.
 
If you have installed X1 in full after you installed X3 you stand to lose just the file associations if you just went ahead with the default. If I did that myself personally I would install X3 again as a precaution in case any newer reg entries or plugin files got overwritten....
... Correction I would uninstall both and do it like I initially suggested.. There may be no need to do this but I'm a cautious fellow.

 
My current advise (as you have now installed X1) is optional , there may be no need to take it if you aren't running into further issues. Cakewalk would have done a lot to separate X1 from X3 so they don't conflict when installing backwards but I'm not sure they would have tested for that scenario.

It's already been covered... What he said was you didn't need to install X1 which was true. I don't see any need to rehash what was already written on the other thread what was stated was perfectly clear in that context. Anyway I'm glad it's now working. Cheers.

I remember it via the custom install option. If I am talking out of my behind I'm happy to be called out.
