Thoughts on all-in-one
All you computer experts out there - I'm thinking of getting something like this: http://shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Desktops/HP-ENVY/E7N92AV?HP-ENVY-Recline-23-k100xt-TouchSmart-All-in-One-Desktop-PC-ENERGY-STAR- for live and supplemental use. I'll either use live or Sonar's matrix for performance. I wish one of the music computer manufactures made something like this, but they don't. As far as the form - I don't like laptops much and tablets are still a year or two away from being I was never an expert and am sadly behind the times these days as far as making much sense of the specs. I'm wondering if it is worth the money to get a better processor - quad 2.5 gigHz I5 and if that would make much of a difference. And any other thoughts. Thanks, y'all. @

Looking at that 1k pricetag, have you asked Scott or Jim if they build one for you in that range?

Mesh, I'm sure they could build a nice one for that much. But I would haul a touch screen, too, and I'm lazy. Also spent too many years doing other people's live shows, so this form is for convenience. But I'm all ears if Scott or Jim could rig me up something. They don't have any all-in-ones on their sites. @

Hi AT, the issue with that type of machine: It's a tight space (similar to a laptop). That means compromises to performance (to keep heat in check)... just like a laptop. There's very little room for internal expansion. Unlike standard ATX, mATX, mini-ITX based machines, there's no upgrading it several years down the road. If you're not going to push the machine too hard, you'll likely be fine. If you'll be running heavy loads, I'd look for something else. You might consider a cube based machine. Small/portable... without those limitations. If you want small-form-factor, make sure the case allows for self-contained water cooling. This will enable you to run a high-performance desktop CPU. We build cube based machines (just don't have them up on the new website - yet). I'm sure Scott does as well...

Jim, thanks for the info. I'm not in that big of a rush - waiting for a check, actually, so I might not get anything for a while. At least it ain't in the mail ;-) I've got a desktop for real recording here at home. And all the reasons you listed are why I've shied away from investing in a laptop for work. I'll be looking for your cube when you get it up. Thanks

The all in ones are basically a laptop with a desktop screen and keyboard. All I've seen even come with the laptop type "charger" for the AC power supply. The CPU's and video are usually the "mobile" (laptop) versions. If you want a desktop, get a desktop, not a laptop disguised as a desktop. Even a low end desktop, many times, will be better than the all in one.

Jim, is there a good rack mount touch screen you would recommend to couple with your Computers?
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

That's a really expensive combination 19" 8U unit with touch-screen (1280x1024) is ~$900 This is truly "bleeding-edge" Samsung 17" 6U unit with touch-screen (1920x1080) is ~$950 Touch features are primitive compared to current desktop models (Planar, Acer, etc)

Boy, a lot of good info. Thanks all. Does anyone have any comments on the processor speed? $40 for a 2.5 gHz as opposed to 1.9. It sounds like a good deal, but I have no idea of the real world speed boost. If I decide to go the all-in-one route. @

If you go that route, get the fastest processor available. It's easy to justify the $40 for 2.5GHz vs. 1.9GHz

Scott, thanks for the links. Both systems look good (as one would expect), but not really what I'm looking for. I really like the idea of the tilting screen, which is why I like that all-in-one model. Of course, none of those are exactly right, either. Lenovo has one you can put a second drive in, but no tilt. And Asus has one that is almost perfect too. Maybe by the time I get around to buying, I'll find the perfect one, although that HP is pretty close. Thanks all! @
