I need to reinstall my Waves plug-ins nearly every time I want to use them.

Hi guys, I've done a search and it would appear there have been a few problems with SONAR not 'remembering' the settings of Waves plug-ins.

However, my problem is that for some reason, SONAR is completely 'losing' my Waves plug-ins.

Here's what I sent to their Tech Support - apologies if it's a bit wordy, but there might be something here that explains what I'm doing wrong:
========================================
Hi there

I have purchased the following Waves plug-ins:
> Renaissance Bass
> Chris Lord-Alge Signature Series
> TrueVerb

I purchased TrueVerb about a week ago, and prior to that, I had never experienced any problem whatsoever with R-Bass and the CLA VSTs.

I downloaded the Waves installer and followed the instructions to install TrueVerb on my system. It then worked perfectly inside SONAR, as did R-Bass and CLA (I have numerous instances of these plug-ins on every project).

However, when I next booted up my PC and opened SONAR, I received warning messages that all my Waves plug-ins failed to load.

A typical warning states:

I receive the same message either when I try to load a Waves VST, or when I try to open the UI of a Waves plug-in already inserted into a project.

After I close the message above, I receive this error message:

I could understand these messages if I'd deleted or moved the WaveShell dll from my VST folder, but I've done neither.

In fact, SONAR completes a VST scan on start, and when I check my VST Manager, all the Waves plug-ins are listed as available. However, in my Layout, these plug-ins are there, but are all greyed out. The WaveShell-VST 9.3_x64.dll is sitting there in my VST folder, but SONAR just isn't seeing it for some reason.

The only way I can get them back again is first to delete them all and then reinstall them again from the 9.3 installer.

This is the process I go through, in case it help you fathom this out:
  1. Using Windows Programs and Features, I uninstall "Waves Complete V9r20" to completely remove it from my system.
  2. I run a VST scan in SONAR to ensure it hasn't found any remnant of the Waves plug-ins
  3. I run the installer: "woli.exe" (making sure to Run As Administrator)
  4. I select "Version 9" from the options available
  5. I allow "Waves Complete" to be installed to C\Program Files (x86)Waves
  6. I select my VST folders as the destination for the WaveShell VSTs (as I can't see any way to prevent the 32bit version installing, I allow it to install to my 32bit VST folder, even though I never scan this folder)
  7. On the Select Products screen, I select: Waves License Centre; CLA Artist Signature Collection; Renaissance Bass; and TrueVerb - and then I click Install.
  8. I open SONAR and all the Waves plug-ins are working again.

I'm guessing I must have done something incorrectly when I added TrueVerb to my system, as my other Waves plug-ins had been running flawlessly before.
========================================

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi Steve, are you installing one plug-in then installing another i.e. one at a time.  I know this causes issues, when I wanted to test a plug-in a few weeks ago, I installed the test plug-in but didn't click the plug-in that I already installed which was Kramer master tape.  When I went to use master tape...computer says no!!  Try retrieving the license.  Otherwise contact Waves support as this is a Waves issue not a Sonar issue.  Waves support are pretty good.

I found the waves installer horrific myself (never worked for me) and consequently I have avoided their products. I'm sure it works for others perfectly well. I agree contact waves tech support.

I had some issues with Waves a while back and this is what I did.
Run the installer to uninstall all the plugins.
Delete the Waves directory in program files(86).
Delete all Waves folders in users\Appdata.
Check c:\programData for a Waves folder and delete if there.
Remove all Waves plugin entries in registry: Computer\HKEY_Current_User\software\cakewalk music software\Sonar Producer\cakewalk VST X64\Inventory
Once all these folders and reg entries are delete run the installer again and just choose the plugs you own. You don't have to select Waves license center, that gets install automatically.
    Hope this helps.

You may also find that there are registry keys in Sonar's "Inventory" hive that still list previous versions of the Waves plugins. Delete those keys and restart Sonar. This is what happened to me when I went from 9.2 to 9.3.

Received the exact same error message as you. After I deleted the keys, everything worked just fine again.

yeah man, I just bought the DeEsser this weekend and went through the standard angst associated with installing a Waves plug in.  It's nothin' nice...  My PC is offline so that made it even worse.  I installed the offline installer.  That pretty much blew up everything.  Sonar couldn't find the VST folder, and it went into a loop of looking and trying to load the project...  Not good...  After un-installing the offline installer, re-booting, re-install, I finally got back to work.

The Waves installer is a little confusing as it allows you to uninstall or install everything, by bundle or individually. It could be clearer and to be honest I would love a "log in" feature during the installer that just installs everything you've bought and/or activates trials.

That said, their support has always been really good to me so I would definitely drop them a line.

Many thanks to everyone who's chipped in, I really appreciate it

I emailed Waves Tech Support as advised and the guy there walked me through the process of completely removing anything to do with Waves before getting me to do a fresh install.

At the moment, everything seems to be working as it should.

    Again, thanks for your input!

I had a different issue but maybe the same remedy will work. For me, I had a blank UI using the VST 2.4. I did this:

Checked the "WaveShell-VST 9.3.dll" in my VST folder.
I then checked it against the same file located in C\Program Files (x86)\Waves\Waves Shells. I copied the WaveShell-VST 9.3_x64.dll file and pasted it in the C:\Program Files\Common files\VST2 folder. The WaveShell-VST 9.3.dll file that was in the C:\Program Files\Common files\VST2 folder was moved to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common files\VST2 folder. Those were the folders I originally went to install them into. The Cakewalk VST folder was the default installation but I wanted it elsewhere.

I think the problem is that the installer is putting the files in the wrong places. After I moved them, everything works great. This may or may not work for you but it's worth a shot. Just remember where things were before you move them in case you need to put them back.

What has always worked for me is I let the Waves installer put the .dll files where they default to, but I then copy all the files and put them into the default cakewalk vst folder. I read this from someone online that had done the same. So, yes, I have duplicate but c'est la vie. I was always afraid to delete the default waves folder.
