Automation - Envelopes nodes resolution

I am recording a guitar track. I'm trying to find a convenient way to record my midi pedal movement which is assign to a WahWah plugin. I'm able to set up everything in sonar and record the automation filter except that I end up with a relatively poor nodes frequency (nodes are recorded far apart) Then they get all linked up with linear segment. On playback it sound really choppy as you can easily ear the change in pace each time you hit a node.
 
Recording a MIDI instrument using the same pedal result in silky smooth curve. Using The draw tool to trace the automation lane results in a far higher number of nodes and sounds much better, but is much less convenient.
 
Is there anyway to record a controller more precisely using evelopes?
