Words--new song sending for mastering to G&J Audio. Seeking final feedback.

Thank you for listening. It's contemporary country. Story of a young man who couldn't find the words when they were most needed. Artist is Jon Tucker. I produced the music, played keys (CLP-170, Korg CX3, Omnisphere strings/fx.) Steel guitar from Brazil, vocals, drums and lead and acoustic guitars Austin Texas. No compression/eq. on master buss--leaving that to Gene Paul.

I like to hear specifics to catch anything that might pull your ear and should be backed off, raised, eq'd

    Hi Micheal,

What a pretty country song!! I didn't pick up on anything overly huge but I heard a few things I might do if it were my mix. Keep in mind I listened on headphones and you might have mixed primarily for open sound. I'm not hearing as much stereo separation as I would like..on headphones the song seems lacking in spacial quality. Both yours and the backup vocalist voices are really nice! I'm not hearing the same polish and detail on the backup vocalist as in the lead vocal..nothing really overt, but enough that I'm noticing it. Even though she is in the background I think she needs to be polished some...maybe all it needs is a slight bump in the mids..very slight.

    Hi Michael,

Excellent as always from you.  If you want to soften the bg vox as Starise suggested, slowing up the compressor release on that vocal track outta tuck it in just a bit.

thank you and nice to hear from you. Yes, the panning has been rough on this one. At one point I had the acoustics on the right to balance out the piano. Maybe it should go back there and the organ on the left. Problem with that was at the end there is only organ and piano playing off each other and its nice they are on opposite sides. I considered just panning on organ for the end on the right, and have it on the left the rest of the song, but go through these "keep it real" times.. I will give it another listen.

Thanks and long time no see/hear--except the occasional pizza post on FB. Will check if the compressor I used has release. Might be the Puig. Will give it a go.

Hi Michael, this sounds terrific overall, really good, warm sounding mix. The only thing that jumps out to me is the female BGV, which seems a little too present and seems to crowd the lead occasionally. Minor fix though, this is very nice work.

Yeah... really nice song.... I love all the key changes and how they fit flawlessly.

I agree on the female vox being a bit to present (loud)  since she's BGV and not a duet. I'd look at pulling her vox down a few db in a few places....or perhaps overall.

What are your plans for this tune?  Cutting it on your own CD or pitching it?  It's almost too traditional ballad sounding for what they call country in N-town these days.

Thanks everyone. Hmm. Too traditional sounding. I know what you mean. I only produced it for the artist.
I think his plans are to put on his CD. I wouldn't have put steel guitar, and would have used another guitarist
had I had full rein. But, I probably wouldn't even know how to produce a "contemporary N-sounding song,
though I am from Tennessee. Anyway's, thanks for the help.

    Hi Michael,
    Really nice sounding tune.
I'm not sure if it's the BG vocal being too loud or if the lead vocal might need to come up a bit, especially in the passages with full instrumentation going on.
In any event, that balance between the two was the only niggle I would have, overall it's a great sounding mix.
    Nice work!

Like most others who have commented I have to agree this is a great song on every level!!  I agree too that the female vocal could be pulled down just a tad. but other than that I thought it was really, really good.

Sounds great. Personally, I'd call this more traditional country pop. I have no idea where country music is going anymore. More rock/pop oriented. Never listen anymore. But good song.

It sounds like John Cage's, "4:33". I don't know why soundclick's player never plays. Anyone know why I can't use their player?

Yes, sent the mix to one of my mixing colleagues and he suggested to go back to the Auratones and follow the lead a little closer--just as you suggested. I did bring the girl down a little and thin her out a bit, raised the organ in the bridge, and replayed the strings. Thank you everyone for your help.

Very nice intro - feel and sonically.
Acoustic is too thin sounding.  Vocals are really good in delivery and EQ.
Love the feel of the singing.  The mix is really good.
By the 2nd chorus, I am hooked.
What a cool song.  I would not put the distorted guitar in the center as it bumbs into the lead vocals.
This song should be heard by millions.
    Nice going.

Well what do you know. Soundclick works again. (I just did a Win 7 reinstall)

Maybe it's me but I find when I hear country music from, pardon the term, "no nameres" I tend to like it better. Maybe it's because you put that much more effort into it to be heard? Either way, nice song and some excellent vocals!

Very pretty. Listening on headphones, here's what jumped out at me: On the very first word of the song ("Words...") there is sibilance on the "s." It's not terrible, but once I heard it I kept hearing it on all the words that end in "s." The sibilance seems to go away after the first minute or so -- maybe because the singer's delivery is changing as he gets into it, or the track masks it or something, but out in the open at the beginning you might want to try to de-ess it. The mix is fine, and I don't have a problem with the soundstage or balance. Great job.

Thanks Larry. I as well as noticed and let it pass. But, thanks to your observation, I have written the mastering house and asked if I should send a different mix.

Listening on headphones..... wow.... this is gorgeous.

I don't know if you edited it since I listened a few days ago.  The vocals seem to fit a bit better on this listen.

    Very well done.

Now.... the only downside if there is one is that the song is almost 5 minutes in length. BUT.... if the artist likes it and it's going on a CD..... hey, I'm a fan of the longer songs myself....

Very pretty song, like it a lot. I often work as a duo with male/female vocals so the volumes didn't faze me as much. In fact we would make it a feature of our music and although there was some initial reluctance to accept the mix in this way, it was eventually accepted and appreciated. Really good mix, I would be very proud.
