Weirder than the weirdest album...
Second chapter of my Advanced Music Production certification is dedicated to pitch and timing correction. I loaded the project and pressed play.
What the heck is that? My teeth hurt.
Sounds like a very poor copy of Primus mixed with an avant-garde jazz band. I can't tell what's a mistake and what's intentional. The timing is off, but so entirely that I don't know which parts are actually right.
I went on ahead and fixed the intonation issues - like that C on the trumpet which supposedly sounded off and should have be a C#. (That's according to the instructions because honestly, it doesn't sound anymore odd than the rest of the track - I never could have told that this part in particular was off.)
I'm pretty amazed at how good the pitch correction tools work and how cool it can be when used with automation. I admit I'd never really used pitch correction before.
I also fixed the timing issues, using the looping utility, transient markers and the various time stretching option, live and offline. Again it's not something I really us much.
But I can't for the life of me tell whether the song actually sounds better or worst. It's just as alienating.
To paraphrase Spinal Tap, (avant-garde) jazz is mistakes...
That being said, how amazing the tools offered to us by the digital age...
