Weirder than the weirdest album...

Second chapter of my Advanced Music Production certification is dedicated to pitch and timing correction. I loaded the project and pressed play.

What the heck is that? My teeth hurt.

Sounds like a very poor copy of Primus mixed with an avant-garde jazz band. I can't tell what's a mistake and what's intentional. The timing is off, but so entirely that I don't know which parts are actually right.

I went on ahead and fixed the intonation issues - like that C on the trumpet which supposedly sounded off and should have be a C#. (That's according to the instructions because honestly, it doesn't sound anymore odd than the rest of the track - I never could have told that this part in particular was off.)

I'm pretty amazed at how good the pitch correction tools work and how cool it can be when used with automation. I admit I'd never really used pitch correction before.

I also fixed the timing issues, using the looping utility, transient markers and the various time stretching option, live and offline. Again it's not something I really us much.

But I can't for the life of me tell whether the song actually sounds better or worst. It's just as alienating.

To paraphrase Spinal Tap, (avant-garde) jazz is mistakes...

That being said, how amazing the tools offered to us by the digital age...

Not sure what you're up to there Rain but perhaps part of the test is to see how you interpret the material and how you personally feel it needs to be changed. A good producer is sometimes expected to do a lot more than just fix technical stuff. Kind of like an extension of the songwriting team who's looking at the material from a different angle.

Honestly, if anyone came up to me to work on such a project, I'd immediately let them know they're asking the wrong person. ;)

I've listened to my share of weird music though. My ex-wife LOVED musique concrète and all the experimental atonal stuff she could find - I remember her spending $50 on a CD that contained nothing but noises made with a piano - not by playing the keys but by knocking the instrument, scratching things and such... We went our separate ways shortly after. ;)

In this case however, it's a very well structure lesson plan, so I'm not left on my own. The book tells me exactly what to fix. Which is fortunate because honestly, IMHO, everything sounds wrong in that project. :P
