Good to see some Bongwater in there. I'd almost forgotten about them. Totally reminds me of my early experiences with, well, bongs.

I don't have any of those. I do have 'The Black Rider' by Tom Waits, which is frankly, terrifyingly odd.

One of my favorite albums ever. And not just because it has the word black on it. :P

Wow, really???  A fairly quick look and it appears I have 40%!  (Yes, that means 20 out of the 50.  )

So you don't have Pink Floyd's, or Zappa's, or Hawkwind's, or Jimi's, or the Beatles???  Wow.

I had 'Piper' and 'Space Ritual' on vinyl, sold 'em years ago. The only Zappa I had was 'Chunga's Revenge', that's gone too. Never owned any Beatles or Hendrix albums.

    Shock horror.

Never felt the need to buy Beatles stuff, it was played ad nauseum on the radio when I was growing up. I didn't, and still don't, like Hendrix's guitar playing, or vocals (same goes for Clapton). I recognize both their places in the scheme of things though.

Trout Mask Replica is an abrasively strange record. You can clear a room every time by putting that on the turntable.

It is good though! I haven't looked yet but I wonder if The Incredible String Band is on there. You can clear a room with them too. Some of the Monks Of Doom records are an acquired taste, very good but very strange at first. Going to take a look.
OK, I like Ascension a lot. I never imagined Sgt Peppers or Axis as weird albums. I had forgotten about Skip Spence, I might have to check that out.

    Weird stuff in my collection:

    Delirium Cordia by Fantomas
Everything by Mr. Bungle (California being one of my favorite records ever)

As a matter of fact, pretty much everything by Mike Patton - his solo albums and his work with John Zorn take the palm though.

Speaking of John Zorn - IAO... Spooky weirds stuff.

Alice Cooper's Dada... Though, come to think of it,  Pretties for You and Easy Action probably outweird it.

Nine Inch Nails, Fixed. Even for NIN, that's weird.

Back when I was 21 I had a couple of friends who hated Frank Zappa with a vengeance. Every now and then they would come over to my apartment and outstay their welcome, and all I had to do was put "Absolutely Free" on loud and not say a single word. Nobody said anything, but we all knew what that album meant. And they'd do their level best to endure it as if to say "screw you, we're not going anywhere" but you could guarantee they'd be saying their goodbyes before the end of Call Any Vegetable. Which is a shame, because I think they probably would have liked Suzy Creamcheese.

Weirdly enough I had one of my best friends from college staying with us this weekend as he was contributing a painting and a bunch of prints of same to our alma mater to establish a scholarship endowment. It was like we'd never even been apart and picked up right where we left off. Totally fab. He is pretty well known in the art world...which makes the music biz look like an afternoon tea party by comparison. He told me of the time he happened to meet the Captain (Don Van Vliet) on the streets of NYC and told him that Trout Mask Replica was one of his favorite albums (mine too) and that he listened to it all the time. "You do?", said Don, "and how's that workin out for you?"

    Gotta love him.

Ice Cream For Crow is still my favorite though.

I'm not sure if Maggot Brain is even the weirdest Funkadelic album. From a group that had members perform on stage diapers and gave us a singing underwater worms and song titles like promental****backwashpsychosisenemasquad, I guessbyou have to just had one album and roll with it.

    Hi,

You guys don't know weird - especially CraigB who still refuses to help me with my holy chap alas, whatever that is. For the record, here's the first part of my list of what you uneducated people consider weird,  starting with the letter A.

If you guys are nice, I'll be back with the letter B.

Re: The 50 weirdest albums of all time! 2014/09/02 13:09:29 (permalink)
I own some extremely bizarre underground stuff I collected during my touring/gigging days. Mostly demos of punk/artsy/industrial/fusion/WTF/etc type craziness from opening acts or just weirdos in the crowd handing me stuff. Lots of handmade DIY weirdness (I swear to god I have a demo from this one band where the totally weird ass chick lead singer told me they ran out of jewel cases so she cut pocket off her stinky, tour stained corduroy pants... like the whole pocket so her ass was showing, safety pinned one of their patches on it and stuffed the disc inside... and it is WEIRD music).

But I have to say the weirdest album by a well known artist I have is a cassette of Alice Cooper Live at the Whisky A Go Go from 1969. There are some tunes off the earliest albums but much of it is total WTF territory and they were obviously BLASTED out of their minds. Oddly enough I found it in the discount bin at a dollar store I was working at at the time (I was like 16 or something) amongst the Kenny G and "Solid Gold 50's" type crud. I listened to that thing endlessly and honestly I think it had a profound influence on my songwriting. It's all completely out of tune and off time and god only knows what the hell was going on on stage or in the audience (apparently that weird group of chicks that used to follow Zappa around were in the audience... forget what they called themselves but you can hear them screaming their heads off) but man do I love that album. I just cruised around youtube hoping someone had posted it in its entirety but alas only a couple of tunes and they are the much more normal ones...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pCiLPqoQsw

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZITQuE-_aI

I should dig out the tape and digitize it because it has been years since I listened to the whole thing.

Other than that a lesser but still relatively well known in certain circles dude/act I own some material from is Feotus (JG Thirwell). I've only got the Sony release Gash and a live album they did called boil (both of which I paid pretty good money for). Their older stuff is extremely rare and much of it only available on vinyl. Markyzno is actually a fan which goes to show me how cool and diverse this forum is (BTW if you haven't heard Mark's album check it the frack out. It is in itself very cool and quite off the beaten path).

So yeah... I'm sure some of the older dudes probably have the AC album or have heard it (and I'm just gonna go ahead and assume craigB owns it) but if you want vintage live weirdness keep your eyes out for that one.

Honestly as a metalhead I bought it thinking it would be more traditional style Coop (which is pretty weird as it is) but ended up with... well... I don't know WTF that was. Art Death Prog?

Oh and how can I forget... Richard Hell and the Voidoids "Blank Generation". Unfortunately youtube only has a playlist for the album that bleeds into later stuff which isn't as good. BG is a very strange album without losing musicality though and worth a listen.

    https://www.youtube.com/w...ist=PLC7A055A1CF686683

Richard Hell was actually in Television who are considered "protopunk" so basically before the Pistols broke and considered pretty influential to the whole movement.
