Nice. But - no Sea Lion Caves, Devil's Cauldron or Devil's Punchbowl? You missed out on a bunch of cool bumper stickers and souvenir shops.

You really know how to frame a shot Mike. They all look like tourism posters or something for a coffee table book. Remember those?

What lens did you use? Canon L series?

Re: Photos from Oregon Coast 2014/09/04 09:56:04 (permalink)
Thank you to everyone for sharing in my enthusiasm of the photos and the subject matter.

Hi John, I did use L lenses. I used the 35mm f1.4, a 70-200mm f2.8, and a 400mm f5.6 on these photos.

For example; The shot of Heceta Head Lighthouse was with a 400mm f5.6L mounting on a tripod. The light house was 0.8 miles away and the wind was blowing at 20+ knots on the cliff where I was standing. I had to pay a lot of attention to shutter speed. I was shooting so fast that I didn't need a tripod, but it let me frame up and concentrate on other stuff... like making sure the rig didn't blow away. :-)

I ended up going full manual with the exposure settings and I really enjoyed using that work flow as it let me compose the framing without having to worry about the exposure changing slightly with each shot. That let me dial in the exposure so I could have lots of head room for the photo shop "developing".

All the shots are framed in the camera. I don't have any reluctance to crop after the fact but in this case I just shot what I hoped to use.

The scenery on the Oregon coast seemed like it wanted to jump in to the camera, I had a great time seeing all the sights and finding opportunities to make photos of such nice settings.

Thank again to everyone who took the time to take a look and post a comment.

Hey Mike, did you shoot the originals as RAW files?

If so, would you mind if I had a play with them in my HDR software?

No probs if you don't fancy it, but I have a few ideas that I think might really work well with the shots in your OP.

Very cool, Mike. Like you say, the scenery just seems to jump into the camera.
We crossed paths about a week apart.

It looks like our vantage points were about twenty feet apart.
I like that cool Ektachrome flavor you have going on.

Well, it IS the micro-brew capital of the World, so if you like beer...

I know my home bar, the Horse Brass Pub (where my dart team plays out of) has a sister bar called the Prince of Wales in South London and we certainly seem to get plenty of UK'ers out here!

(Hehe, "UK'ers" sounds appropriately dirty, doesn't it?)
