VST issue after installing X3 Producer "E" upgrade
I'm not sure if this is just coincidence, but immediately after installing the "E" upgrade, none of my NI soft synths will load into Sonar, but I get this error message " Failed to insert soft synth. The synth may not be properly installed." All of the synths are working fine in stand-alone mode. I verified all of the dll's were in the proper directories, then reset and rescanned the VST's in Sonar. My EastWest Play (and other brand) soft synths are loading fine, it's just the NI product. When I select INSERT SOFT SYNTH, all of my NI synths are now found under DIRECTX/NI when they used to appear in the VST2 folder. I'm going to call CAKEWALK support in the morning, but am trying to get a project finished tonight. If anyone has a suggestion, I'd appreciate it.

scook - Thanks for the quick reply. I had already tried the VST reset and rescan - made no difference.

This was not part of the initial message I saw when I replied. Double check the VST scan path and make sure the NI VST versions are in the scan path. VST plug-ins won't be listed in the DirectX folders.

The VST scan path actually contains more folders than I use, as I consolidated all of the VSTs into one folder some time ago. But, that hasn't affected anything in the past, and shouldn't now. I just went back in again and verified all of the dll files are still where they belong, and they are. I can't figure out why Sonar is seeing the NI instruments as DirectX, and I'm sure that's where the problem lies, just can't figure out how it got that way, and what I need to do to fix it. The DirectX folder used to contain only the Cakewalk instruments (TTS-1, Cyclone, PSYN, and Roland GrooveSynth). Now, at the bottom of that list is an NI subfolder, which contains all of my NI instruments.

What OS? What was the last version of SONAR that saw the NI VST plug-ins? I am guessing 32bit SONAR is being used. Is SONAR running as administrator? Which NI instruments are missing ex. Kontakt 5, Reaktor 5, Battery 3? Do the stand alone versions still load? DXi instruments are added to the registry during installation. They are not scanned by the VST scanner used by SONAR. DXi plug-ins can be installed anywhere on the PC.

Running Windows 7 -64 bit and SONAR X3-64 Sonar X3 Rev D worked - everything was running fine until the upgrade to "E" All of my NI instruments are now loading into the DirectX folder. I have 10 of them, and all are probably pre-2009. The stand-alones NI instruments work just fine. SONAR is running as admin.

What does the Plug-in Manager report as the paths to NI DXi instruments? They can be found by running the Plug-in Manager, selecting the DirectX Instruments (DXi) category and the NI instruments. The full paths are reported at the bottom of the Plug-in Manager. It would be a first if these are VST dlls. While there check the VST excluded list.

While the NI instruments show up in the DirectX folder when you go to insert a soft synth, they don't appear anywhere in the plug-in manager - not DXi or VST.

Are you using the "Default All Plug-ins" layout?

The plug-in layouts selection is at the top of the plug-in menus.

If I'm looking in the right place, on the upper right it says Plug-in Menu Layout, and just below that is a pull down menu. It is blank, and if I pull down the menu there is only one choice, "X3 Producer Effects."

Wrong place. That is in the Plug-in Manager and is used to create layouts but it does sound like there are no custom layouts other than the one supplied with X3 Producer available. Just to make sure, each menu which inserts plug-ins has an option to set the layout manager. For example, in the browser, it is the down arrow on the Plugin tab with the Instruments button selected and in the Synth tab under + > Insert Synth.

Sorry. There are two items checked, DEFAULT ALL PLUG-INS and SORT VST3 PLUG-INS BY CATEGORY.

Yeah - that's a weird one. I have never had that sort of an issue with NI components, and have had NI since Komplete 3 up to Komplete 8 (didn't buy 9). Bob Bone

This makes sense. So from what I can tell: The plug-in list was correct in X3d Producer 64bit on this machine The only changes to the machine since a correct plug-in list was the X3e update, reset and rescan of the VST plug-ins Now the NI synth plug-ins are nowhere to be found in the Plug-in Manager but appear in the DirectX section of the Default All Plug-ins layout in the browser. All the other synth plug-ins before and after the NI VST plug-ins appear correctly. Yes, his is a puzzle worth a call to tech support.

Try moving the NI sub folder to the Cakewalk/VSTplugins folder under C:/Cakewalk/VSTplugins.

I want to thank those that took the time to respond. While the troubleshooting didn't provide a solution, it sure saved a lot of time on the phone with tech support this morning, because you had eliminated a lot of possibilities. It may have just been some sort of glitch in SONAR, but I reinstalled it and the VSTs are being recognized like they should. If I was really brave, I'd reload the "E" update and see what happens, but "D" is very stable in my system, so I'll leave it alone for the time being. Thanks again for the help!

Set a system restore point and install E. E is definitely one more step above D, and if it doesn't work out, you can always go back to before you installed it.

Thanks, Craig - I'm still having a few issues with it, but will take your advice and try "E" once I get the whole system stabile again.
