Best "power" drumsets?
So does anyone know where to get good "power" drumsets? More specifically, I'd love a kit that replicates what I've heard on Virtua Tennis for the Dreamcast. (I guess the Chaos SoundFont bank comes close, but I'm not sure…)

That's a pretty big subject according to needs and budget. I'm not familiar with Virtual Tennis ... ( [Update] ... I since checked out a YT vid ... I'm on the right track ... Rock/Heavy) ... but if it's just loops / samples you are after then Dead Winter Audio has some quality analogue freebies and samples of their commercial offerings ... of course, to encourage a purchase. There's a free Yamaha Maple 'kit'. Otherwise: See my recent responses to a Steam Forum post regarding drum 'software'. - If you have: Music Creator - SI Drums - Aggressive / Full throttle kits Sonar X3/Studio - Session Drummer 3 - Rock / Tight / OldZep kits Sonar X3 Producer - Addictive Drums 2 - Studio Rock kit (included) or Fairfax / Metal - DrumMix have a free offering inclusive of their basic interface.

No, no loops; I want a virtual instrument I'd like to plug in whatever I already have in MIDI, either my own works or someone else's. If you're unfamiliar with Virtua Tennis, just search for the Select Player music on Youtube; that should give you an idea of what sound I'm looking for. (I cannot plug specific URLs yet sadly) And yeah, basically, I just want a kit with the sound I'd like out of the box—nothing I'd have to EQ or anything afterward. (However, if the drum software itself comes with similar options (like the first Session Drummer I had for SONAR), I'll consider fiddling with them to get the tone I want, but ONLY if I can get the tone promised) Nothing more than $100, I'm thinking. If I'm right, I want a real-sounding kit, but with POWER: deep yet resonating bass kick, snare, and toms, and each identifiable over each other. Just wondering if this is all feasible? Sometimes I'm a stickler for this sort of thing.

The software is stopping me for posting links again. Getting something that requires no work on your part will be tough. I suggest you look at BFD Eco, it's $99 but is often on sale for much, much less. Its very versatile and one of the presets may get you close enough, but with a little work on EQ and compression you could get closer. Toontrack's Metal Machine EZX would be very close out of the box, but you would also need EZDrummer to run it so it would be above your budget.

Missed a great deal last week - BFD ECO was $29 for a day. :(

Shellstax: I remember poking around Session Drummer 3 a lot, and yet none of the kits seemed quite right. As per your suggestion, I peeked in my folder to see which kits you were referring to. I do seem to have the OldZep and Tight kits, but I don't see anything labeled Rock or Heavy. Were would I find those? Would I have them already, or are they in the store? It's weird, though; after listening to the track and the Chaos SoundFont again, they seem further apart now, and am starting to hear a bit more familiar to the Session Drummer kits than before. I might go back and listen a little better to each some time. Although, I also gave a listen to your other suggestion, DrumMix, and I have to say, the Metal one just might be right up my alley. I've just dropped the $50 on it, and I'll see what I can do with that. Thanks for your tips!

RE: Session Drummer 3 Kits With 'Rock', I was talking about the 'ClassicRock' ... but others too 'Gretsch', 'JBSonar'?) On the Drumkit(vs Mixer) page, double-click in the 'PROG' field to bring up the Progrem Browser. In the 'Acoustic' folder. With 'Rock/Heavy' i was merely refering to the genres. You obviously don't have Producer (X3). For general info - ProChannel Softube Saturation Knob and Concrete Limiter add character and punch simply. Alternative - I also get pretty good 'character and punch' from Punch Evolved (emulated 1176AE Limiting Amplifier Compressor). Only 32bit but works BitBridged in Sonar 64mode. 50% sale at the moment GBP9.99. You mentioned using your existing MIDI clips. Thing is, different drum software may use different MIDI Mappings. Mapping of Multisample kits like the Dead Winter Audio Yamaha Maple Kit can be done with a Drum Sampler. I just use Fretted Synth SoftDrum LTD (free). Good on ya re the DrumMix Metal. Might as well download/install their free kit (actually it's 3 kits). PS: I even had a bit of a play with SI Drums - other kits like 'Tasty' and 'Groovin' might even works with some 'punch'. PSS: Tier-A product (ala AD2) these are not ... but the thread is budget conscious. (Regardless of whether ultimately you'll get a Tier-A product ;)).

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. And also thanks for pointing out two specific channel FX that can help. Actually, this brings up the major reason why I like sounds I can get "out-of-the-box", even though, as Glyn Barnes pointed out, that in itself can be a difficult task. The thing is, whenever I look into all these effects and tools that are offered, I'm a little overwhelmed by all the knobs and switches at one's disposal; there are so many combinations and permutations, and it seems like I have little idea on how I can get what kind of tone I want out of all the possibilities. In fact, unless I have some sort of comparison to a favorite song of mine (as I did here, fortunately), sometimes I myself am not sure what sound I'd like. Granted, going thru available presets and tweaking things here and there afterward helps, but there are still so many options. I've had similar issues trying out AmpliTube on my newly acquired RealGuitar suite while trying for some rock guitar sounds (which I'm thinking of posting on this board when they advertise a sale, as others have done for other software; I love all the articulations that are offered in those programs!) But anyway, yeah, I had mentioned before how the previous Session Drummer had an in-built compressor, and I wondered why Session Drummer 3 dropped that feature? In any case, I hope to use your tips as best as I can, as well as poke around myself still and see what other tools I can utilize. Still, though, I hold the thread open to anyone who can point out (or even make!) a simple and/or free/cheap SoundFont or VST that emulates that Virtua Tennis sound or similar enough. Thanks again, all!

Neither Session Drummer 2 or 3 have an integrated compressor. The original Session Drummer was not a soft synth. I believe you are confusing Session Drummer with SI Drums.

Crud, you're right, sorry about that. That's right, SI Drums is still available in X3, isn't it? For some reason I could only remember opening it in X1… Still, I wish Session Drummer had that compressor, too…

Wish they'd put a, "like" button on this forum. Friendly Floyd, A couple of things I like to chip in with, firstly for $29 the BFD Eco deal is money very well spent and far far better than any of the drums that ship with Sonar although I'm assuming you don't have X3 otherwise you'd be using AD2. Secondly, (and I'll make no apologies for this) Learn how to mix drums and create your own F#ing sounds. I completely understand how overwhelming it is at first but there are so many tutorials and excellent videos on youtube that learning this stuff is so much easier than it ever was + you have lots of really useful people on here who are on hand to help 24/7. I'm still not entirely sure what drum sound your after but if it's This then that shouldn't be too hard to create. It's very verby and compressed and would take me about 10 minutes. Steven Slate also has a lot of those kinds of heavy rock/metal sound but suffers from an awful interface IMHO. Steve
