X3 Install Information
I have read posts/articles about the proper method to install X3 but now I can't seem find those resources, (should have saved them...). If anyone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. One of them suggested "not to" migrate settings from X2. I really only want to do this once. TIA Paul

I don't see any problem with migrating settings. Just install X3 (don't run it), then X3E patch straight away. Start Sonar, then perform a VST reset.

scook similar thread about X2 Producer to X3 Producer upgrade http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3056271 There is a link in this thread where Noel comments about migrating settings.
Thanks Scook! That's the one I was looking for. There are also some issues with Melodyne for us guys who already have Editor 2. I think that info is on the Celemony site. Thanks guys. Paul

I missed the mention of Melodyne already being installed. The bundled Melodyne installer is launched at the end of the X3 install process. I believe Rapture is the last thing installed by the SONAR installer. I have not run the initial X3 installer with Melodyne already being installed. When running updates, I just cancelled the Melodyne installer. As long as the VST3 version of Melodyne Editor is installed, SONAR should pick it up. The Celemony site would be be authoritative source.

Speaking of Melodyne and vst3, I experienced the fact that it installs its vst3 stuff to C:\ProgramData\VT3 or some such without any regard to the fact that vstplugins may be somewhere else. I just moved that folder to the proper place, but be aware that it may not end up where you intend.

VST3 specification calls for plug-ins to be installed in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3". Hard to fault Celemony for following the spec.

So by what right have they taken it upon themselves to decide for me where I want to put my stuff ? This is pretty hard to believe, especially in 2014. (not you scook, the Others).

By what right? The right of creating the specification. It does simplify software installation and host discovery processes. Installation and discovery problems appear frequently on this forum.

Ask Steinberg who created the spec. I have no idea whey they put it under "program files" as this makes it susceptible to permissions issues. Nevertheless a spec is a spec.

I would guess it was placed in Program Files because the VST3 files are binary files intended to be loaded into a host application. AFAIK, there is nothing in the spec regarding user maintained data. I would add, just because the path is spec'd for binaries, the physical location and actual path are not.

I know you're a fan of symbolic links scook, but I run a french version of windows and it uses links all over the place to add a french folder name on top of the real english folder name. I don't much like the idea of having everything I do going through long chains of symbolic links. My resistance is breaking down though, as I encounter more and more software companies (cakewalk, NI and now melodyne/vst3) not letting me choose where to put stuff. As for vst3, in what way is it different from vst2 ? As far as I can recall, every vst2 plugin I've installed has asked me where I wanted it to go.

The VST2 spec is silent about the location of binaries, so many vendors provide destination prompts during installation. The VST3 spec addresses binary location so compliant vendors use the specified binary destination. Don't like it? Write Steinberg. Can't fault the software companies for following the spec.
