Anyone gone from 2 monitors to one larger one?

Thinking of going from my current 2 19" video monitors to a single 27".  Anyone done that?  Love to hear your comments.

I haven't gone from 2 to 1, but I couldn't be happier with my 30" Dell monitor.  Room for just about everything.
(well, I don't have any 80 track projects).

My 14" laptop is another matter.

I recently was using a 42" TV (720P) for a monitor and just recently went to 2 21" monitors.  I am liking the ability to have the console and PRV on the second monitor.  A 27" would be great, but if the resolutions match you might keep one of those 19" monitors for PRV or plug GUIs.

I would use all three monitors. Buy an adapter to handle it if necessary. Or just abandon one 19". You can never get enough screen real estate.

The purpose of multiple monitors is to separate various Sonar functions. Personally I run two 22" monitors(Samsung Syncmaster 226BW) with Track View on one and Console View on the other. I have a 30" LCD monitor on the wall directly above my desk and have thought about incorporating it into my setup but I would need two new videocards and new dvi switch as I have a dual dvi switch running the dual monitors between two computers. Cool thing is I have a wireless keyboard mouse set plugged into the unit so whichever computer is in use the keyboard and mouse work on that computer.

I currently run two monitors off of the on-board graphics of my motherboard.

1 is 32" and the other is 46" both are HDTV.  1 uses VGA and the other HDMI, and I have no performance bottlenecks or any issues whatsoever.

I keep Track View, with Inspector Pane and Browser on 1, and Console View and I just drag any plugin UI's around as needed.

The above works GREAT.

Cookie, you can run VGA and either DVI or HDMI from the same graphics card or from the on-board, with no trouble, giving you 2 displays from the same video card.  You could then have your 3rd display hooked up on your DVI from your other current card.  Give it a shot - it works, and even a plain VGA display is still fine for Sonar.

Right now both computers have the same videocard with dual DVI that runs to the DVI switchbox that runs out to the two 22" Samsungs. I'd need cards with triple or higher monitor support.

*Edit- Both computers currently have one videocard :)

Yeh. I did do that briefly Maarkr. Went from two 19" screens to a 27inch all in one touch HP computer. It was good, and an improvement over the 19's, but I really missed being able to split tracks and console views. Concerns you probably already have no doubt. So the family gained a new PC for the living room, and I built another DAW machine, which has a couple of 24" monitors. Much happier. Expensive trial however. Can you borrow a monitor/TV and trial first?

Keep in mind that going from two 19" 1920x1080 monitors to one 27" 1920x1080 monitor is a downgrade.

If you go with one monitor you'll enjoy it more if you actually upgrade to a monitor that has more pixels than you are giving up.

For example; My single 4,096,000 pixel monitor is just about equal to two monitors that total 4,147,200 pixels

The next time around I'll buy a single monitor that has approximately 8,847,360 pixels.

Re: Anyone gone from 2 monitors to one larger one? 2014/09/13 11:17:17 (permalink)
thanks... i didn't give many details and I should have... i like splitting the DAW with the tracks on the left and the multidock on the right.  These are widescreen 19" setup basically side to side, so it's like one wide screen.  Res is 1440 x 900, and the 27's are like 1920 x 1080.  Got interested now that the price point is down to just over $200.  Using one video card (Asus HD 6770) with dvi and vga out.
I could always try it out and take it back to the store if I don't like it.   I have some real estate probs so I don't know if 3 monitors will work?  When I built my studio table years ago, two 15" monitors fit just right in the center area... guess i forgot to expect future changes.

Just a suggestion.

You can pick up a 32" HDTV these days for $200 or less.  I have 2 of them, plus my 46".  They work great for Sonar.  They also tend to have a combination of HDMI, DVI, VGA, and even USB ports these days.

Have you seen the new super wide displays from LG? Aspect ratio is 21:9!! I believe they're targeting graphics/photography pros but the first thing I thought was I could display an -entire- console with no scrolling, or a substantially increased track view in length. Great for cues, etc, or emulating a decent sized desk on your screen. Won't help if you segregate tasks by screen or how well it works with things like the Mackie HUI interface where you switch banks of channels. But interesting.

I did. With the Sonar X series, with the dock and screensets , I don't really see a need for more than one screen.
I got tired of needing to turn my head  to concentrate on what I was doing. I find it more comfortable working for long periods looking straight ahead.
I did add a touch screen but I mounted it below my main monitor slanted like a control surface. The touch screen is the only screen that I use when working in Sonar.
Sometimes I leave the GUI for my audio interface on the upper screen while tracking just to keep an eye on levels coming into my audio interface.

I recently upgraded to an Asus PB278Q - 27", 2560x1440, WQHD
Contrast ratio is 80,000,000:1 - whites are super bright and colors jump right out of it.

Got it for audio/vid/photo work and there's plenty of tack sharp real estate
In Sonar, all 14 modules are visible on the control bar at the top (with room to spare), and displays 47 minimized tracks in the main screen.

I did exactly that. I'm comfortable with the results, mostly. I'd like the PRV and V-Vocal to appear in a second monitor, though, but I don't have any room on my desk for another monitor.

I have 2 x 24" monitors. Not sure whether I want to upgrade to 2 x 27" or just one large HDTV. Mind you 2 x 24 has been plenty of real estate. Since I've finally got exclusively dedicated studio space at home I haven't really set things up properly. Too many options can be worse that too few.

Re: Anyone gone from 2 monitors to one larger one? 2014/09/14 02:07:27 (permalink)
I would like more screen real estate. I have a 24" @ 1920 x 1200 and do not enough room for a second monitor.

Unfortunatly most of the reasonably priced 27" + monitors and TVs do not go above this resolution so I would not get any more on the screen, just the same but bigger. If you work a long way from the screen or have poor eyesight this may be an advantage but in the small space I have it would not help.

I am really after more vertical space, first, and more horizontal second, a 27" 2560 x 1440 monitor would be ideal but I am not prepaired to pay the asking price at this momen

Some displays (not TV's) will allow you to turn them on their side, so you go vertical, rather than horizontal, if that is what you want.
