I think the state of entertainment is the best it's ever been.

Sure, there's a lot of garbage out there. There's nothing on the mainstream channels that interests me. If it wasn't for NPR I would never bother turning on the radio.

But radio and TV are merely shooting for the broadest possible audience, a prime directive that's always going to stifle innovation by encouraging repetition and a general dumbing-down across the board.

But that doesn't bother me. I have simply taken myself out of the pool. Fortunately, we now have alternate channels and a broader selection for entertainment than ever before. If you look for it.

Some great music did indeed come out of the 60's and 70's, but we only remember the good stuff. There was plenty of utter crapola, too. Remember the pro-Vietnam war song "For God, Country and My Baby"?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

That's as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs. - James Bond

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.
