Blackmagic buys Eyeon

I know this is not of direct interest to most but since we were discussing subscription models and alternatives I am posting this.  One of the factors I have mentioned concerning why so many have succumbed to using Adobe despite hating the cloud model.  There are several products Adobe owns that currently have no direct competitors.  The news about Eyeon could conceivably remove one of those monopolies.  Fusion is actually a superior compositing program to AE, but is priced out of AE's range.  Black Magic has a history of acquiring products and dropping price.  Da Vinci Rresolve was an excellant but pricey color grading program used only in high end post proiduction houses before Blsack Magic acquired.  They dropped price of standard and introduced an excellant free version.  If they follow the same path with Fusion, AE will finally have a competitor.

Yes - I'm following this one closely... I really hope you're right! I checked some Fusion 7 videos, and it looks great. Would indeed be great if this will become affordable!

Have you ever used Resolve 11.  Even the free version is very impressive

Yes, started using it (the Lite version)... Had a few start-up niggles, but have to say it's surprisingly slick and intuitive. I don't think this version will replace my premiere pro cs5.5 right now (for editing), but it's definitely a great start. I gathered that 11.1 is now available for download, so will check it out!

I used the previous version for color grading and was thoroughly impressed. It simply was better at that task than any of the plugins and programs I already have. The one drawback was being limited to HD but it is rare when I need larger. I have purposely avoided trying 11 because I am forcing myself to use Speedgrade since it would provide the theoretical most efficient workflow now that I can open premiere projects directly in Speedgrade. Speedgrade is only a hair below resolve imho. I do plan on eventually trying 11's editing features

yes, I have to say colour grading is very intuitive and of great quality. Having said that, I don't have a broadcast standard external monitor, just a 2nd normal (calibrated though) monitor!

I am in the same boat as far as monitor. A calibrated broadcast quality monitor is on my list along with a hardware based scope. For my clients I simply make sure to not do any color gradingb on any layers with their logos to avoid the risk of my 2nd monitor being off.

Not wanting to go too much off topic, but have you ever worked with Mamba FX? I just came across it today, and it seems pretty powerful, node based compositing, for relatively little money!

Does it have everything? No. Still though, for the price, seems pretty cool. I just downloaded a trial.

Mamba is awesome.  I freelanced for a company that used it.  Just not in the budget right now.  I think if I was doing more hardcore visualfx I would invest.  Cheaper than Nuke but still a luxury I can't afford at the moment.  Plus I have several software programs that I need to start using more.  I have barely touched my Mocha Pro except for when  I can't get a decent track in AE. I also have used my trapcode suite plugins sparingly.

Great to hear that! I have to say, it would be a luxury for me too, but at 239 EUROs or so, it seems a steal compared to other programs! And I still have to buy myself a birthday present!
