Bread Knife Bill

howdy y'all -

Here's this week's Kicksville release, Bread Knife Bill: https://kicksville.bandcamp.com/track/bread-knife-bill

The "official" promo blurb kinda says it all.... "Recipe for tasty musical weirdness: Take a 6/8 rhythm from Ghana, and drop one beat. Thicken the 5/8 reduction with a liberal helping of fretless bass noodles. Mix in a hybrid bluegrass/Malian guitar part and a gypsy-ish violin. Sprinkle with some piano bits. Cover with a spoken word piece about the worst house guest you can imagine, and let it marinate in its own juices. Yum yum!"

Hope y'all enjoy this one....I know it's one of my favorites in this batch o' tunes

cheers

Very good stuff Conrad!! Nicely mixed, musically well blended, and enjoyed this jambalaya!!! I'd like to hear the drums a bit more clearly......on my head phones, they sounded slightly muffled.

Other than that, this is an excellent piece of work. Well Done!!

I guess as this is released mix comments are a little wasted.

I like the general feel of the song, the drums, for me, are not so much muffled as slightly understated, in particular the kick.

Good luck with it hope it does something for you thanks for sharing.

Wow very nice tone here. Like those strings. I think a singer will make this song
    really good.

Interestingly weird! I like it! I know people like that but thankfully, they're back in Ohio where I used to live. I can't add anything other than IMO, it's screaming for a slide guitar.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Wow - thanks a lot, everyone! I really appreciate you guys taking the time to listen. And yeah, Gitpima, I think we've *all* known someone like Bill

Mesh & Wookiee: one of the most awesomest things about our mastering engineer is he always listens for things that can be fixed in the mix and advises me accordingly. This mix was a little rushed, and there were a couple of minor things I would have fixed in the mix that I just couldn't get to in time, so he tweaked the master. I was already planning on fixing them and quietly replacing the track on Bandcamp, so I asked him if he thought I should bring the drums up while I was at it. So, there you go - the new version with the fixes I needed to do plus the drums bumped a wee bit will be up on Monday afternoon.

If anyone ever wants to work with a Grammy-level mastering guy, I can not recommend Jay Frigoletto highly enough. He loves working with indie folks, so he keeps his rates very reasonable. He's a really nice guy to work with, AND he's an awesome keyboard player (he's played on a bunch of our songs, including this one). He's also an acoustic engineer, so he's an incredible source for information about acoustic treatment, studio design, etc.

Thanks again, y'all! More to come....

Wild track. Love it. Very unique and cool. I'd have loved to have heard the drums get crazier at some point haha, but yea, very cool piece of music! Would love to hear it live :-)

Oh yeah, I like this one.

Even though it's in 5/8, and for all the weirdness in the instrumentation combination...  it grooves.  Musically, and perhaps mostly because of the violin, it reminds me a little of old Dixie Dregs.   Well done.

I like it a lot! Love the quirk in the beat and vocals made me think a bit of Long John Baldry. Very nice instrumentals as well. I really like the cover art as well. Another batch of what??? lol...

Thanks a lot, y'all! Just catching up with a bunch of things, so haven't had a chance to respond to your comments.

David - I haven't had anybody ask for more drum wankery in a long time, but you made our drummer's day! We'll let him out of the cage when we play this one live for sure

Steve - yeah, the groove is definitely there despite the odd time. When I play this tune, I'm not counting 1-2-3-4-5, just following the agbaja pattern minus a beat, so that definitely keeps it flowing. And wow....the Dregs comments is awesome. Thank you!

Rick - heh....well, it always seems like there are extraneous chemicals involved with people as nasty as Bill And thanks for noticing the cover art - we're really lucky to have such a large pool of talented visual artists to work with. If you're curious, swing by the art page on our website or head over to our Flickr page here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kicksville/

    Thanks again, y'all! Cheers....
