Adding Items to Tools Menu

I know this is a perennial, and I've read the older threads on the subject, and the Knowledge Base article, but... still no joy.

I want to put Sound Forge and RX4 into the Tools Menu, both for convenience.

Here's what I've put into the registry under HKEYLOCALMACHINE/SOFTWARE/Cakewalk Music Software/Tools Menu/Sound Forge:

CurrentDirectory  E:\Sound Forge 11\Sound Forge Pro 11.0
ExePath               E:\Sound Forge 11\Sound Forge Pro 11.0\Forge110.exe
MenuText             &Sound Forge
StatusBarText       Run Sound Forge
Type                    WaveEditor

Paths and directories are confirmed.

Right now, this gives me the "SONAR X3: Cannot start process" error.

Now it gets a little complicated. After I first tried this, I noticed that I actually had two Forge110.exe files. One was in the directory given above, the other was in the directory just above it (E:\Sound Forge 11). When I pointed the registry entries there, the Sound Forge entry in the Tools Menu actually started Sound Forge. (However, this turned out not to be a practical solution for reasons I won't go into unless someone thinks it really matters.)  But... even when Sound Forge starts, it opens with everything on the whole track, not just a selected area or a selected single clip.

I've done the same set of entries for RX4, and it works, EXCEPT the whole track gets opened within RX4, not just the selection.

Unless I don't remember right, it used to be possible to open Sound Forge from the Tools Menu with just the selected portion of a clip. Is that right?

In short, my questions are:

1. Does anyone see anything wrong in my registry entries for Sound Forge?
2. Does anyone know if it's possible to open just a selection with a WaveEditor tool, and if so, how is it done?

Thanks!

This entry is not part of the knowledge base instructions
    CurrentDirectory  E:\Sound Forge 11\Sound Forge Pro 11.0
None of the editors I have in Tools have CurrentDirectory entries.

The path chosen for SoundForge is not the default. I don't have 11 but Sony use to be very picky about where the software was installed. The default for Sound Forge 9 and 10 are "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Sound Forge 9.0\Forge90.exe" and "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Sound Forge Pro 10.0\Forge100.exe" respectively.

Editors in Tools work on complete clips because the whole clip must be swapped after editing.

    Thanks scook.

I've used Sound Forge on my E: drive since version 3 or 4, with no problems at all. Not even in the old days when SF was integrated into SONAR / Cakewalk Pro Audio. But I can have a look.

I see your point about whole clips. However, I find that even if I make a separate clip by splitting it out, the whole track is still loaded.

A clip is a window into an underlying wav file, so the only way to create a new wav file is to split it and then bounce that section to a new clip. I am not sure if this is practical or if this will work (I have never tested this functionality to be honest, but I send tracks (single wav files) to Audition via the tools menu quite often).

Edit: I just checked splitting out a section of a clip and bouncing it prior to sending to Audition and it worked fine. I am still not "convinced" that this is practical, because it requires selecting all of the clips within a track and bouncing again to "reassemble" the piece parts.

Easy way to edit Tools menu is to use my Duckbar utility. No need to hassle with regedit. :)

I edited the above post to reflect testing of the bounce I had mentioned.
