Guys - I need some help recreating about 10 seconds of sound from a classic prog tune

Hi - I am working up a recreated version of a Dixie Dregs song, called Night Meets Light, with real guitar and everything else midi.

In the early part of the song, there is some sort of a synth bass part that comes in a little after the 30-second mark, and then the tone changes as it is played over about the next 10 seconds, where there is distortion added to the sound.

I am trying to figure out how I can recreate that sound, using the soft-synths and effects that I have.

Here is a link to the song in YouTube, and the synth bass part starts coming in around between 30 seconds and about 40 seconds into the song.  Over that 10-seconds the distortion gets cranked up on the sound, but it doesn't actually get much louder, just more distorted.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxkVD5Ol1wQ

My soft synths include Native Instruments Komplete 8 Ultimate (Kontakt 5, Reaktor, Massive, FM8, Absynth), and I also have the Arturia V Collection (recreations of Minimoog, Modular Moog, Arp 2600, Juno 8, Prophet, CS80, Oberheim SEM), as well as what comes with Sonar X3 Producer.

I can't quite figure out what T Lavitz originally used for this - it seems like he used a Minimoog for a lot of things, but I cannot quite get the sound quite right.

Thank you SOOO much for any attempts at assisting me with this - it is a project from the heart I am doing for a guitar playing friend of mine (he is playing all of the Steve Morse guitar parts for our rendition of it), and I am adding drums, bass, violin, synth bass, and keyboard lead for the project.

It is a beautiful song, and I want to give it my best shot.

As a guess, I suspect it's a regular synth bass that has velocity set to open up the filter cutoff.

Maybe I can do it that way - thanks - I will give it a shot tomorrow.

The original Minimoog didn't have any sort of velocity, if I recall correctly.  We had to do all that with the modulation wheel - of course that makes sense now that I think about it - I'll try that.

Remind me to put you in my will.  :)

If he was using a MM for that sound, he probably messed with the filter via the knobs ...assuming it was all done live on the album.
So yeah, any mod source to open up the filter - mod wheel, vel, AT if you have it, an envelope.

Can also go with a clone track, send the clone through a distorted amp sim and do a long Xfade.
    ... but that's cheating

That most likely is a Minimoog, with the cutoff frequency being adjusted while playing. I wouldn't expect it to be difficult to achieve with your Arturia Moog emulation.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks guys - my son came over last night, and after literally 12 hours in the studio, he crashed HARD, so I will chill out for a bit and play some Black Ops 2 until he wakes up, and will then give this all a try.

I did manage to hook up a couple of additional speakers down there while he was snoozing, and am now just going through plugin updates and such, and some COD.

Thanks - it would be my honor to have you listen to it.

It will likely be November or so until it gets done, as I am moving in 2 days, and I also will separately be heading to Chicago - 900 miles of driving each way - for the month of October.

As soon as it is done, I promise I will post it.

If interested, I am also working up midi versions of:

UK - In the Dead of Night
    Jean Luc Ponty - Mirage
Bill Bruford - Fainting in Coils, Sample and Hold, Palewell Park
Dixie Dregs - Twiggs Approved - and eventually also I'm Freaking Out.

I will keep you posted.  Thanks again for the interest :)
