Vacation time!
The wife and I will fly out of Arkansas to Las Vegas Monday night. We have a rental car and are going to Yosemite and Sequoia national park. Is there any suggestions about other must see things while we're there? If time permits we are going to drive a short section of highway 1 by the coast, but we have to catch a flight back on Friday...so not much time. It's been 20 years since I've been to California.

In Vegas? Besides Guitar Center and Sam Ash you mean? And a Cirque du Soleil show called Zarkana? :P A few of my own favorite things: Sight-seeing wise, I love both Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon. The Da Vinci The Exhibition is one of the most breath-taking things I've seen in my life. The National Museum of Atomic Testing was also well worth the detour. Lion Ranch Habitat - if you like big cats. Plus, for an extra fee, we got to play with a cub and feed it. One of the best times of my life! Sharks at the Bellagio were not bad but not as impressive as I'd hoped either. Secret Garden and Dolphin habitat I dug - but again, not all that impressive - there are better alternatives in other cities. I'll try to think of others and let you know if anything comes up. I know there's a pinball museum which I intend to visit someday soon. And of course, I'm a big fan of the KISS mini golf, but that's just me. :P

Incidentally - I did miss the opportunity to see Yosemite Park but my wife and her parents went last year and they've convinced me that I would have to see it for myself eventually. So I guess it's a good choice. :)

Beautiful indeed, Mike. The vast, desolate expanses of Utah have their own flavor. It's strange in a way, but when you cross from Colorado to Utah, the change in scenery is almost immediate. Clint, we just got back from driving Hwy 1. We picked it up at San Francisco, and drove it to the Northern end. I'm not sure how it is down South, but that Northern stretch is a white knuckle road, especially at 4:00AM . It was intense, but tolerable when the sun came up. And it was very pretty. Have a good trip!

Not yet, but I'm hoping to soon enough, though maybe not for next vacation. My wife asked me earlier this week if I still wanted to visit Memphis, Nashville and drive down to New Orleans and then back home though Texas, New Mexico, and all. That was my suggested vacation plan for last winter, and it looks like it could happen early next year. This would be a good time before all the historical studios in Nashville are turned into condos and such...

If you hit Vegas and like the Beatles, try and see "Love" at the Mirage. (And Rain's suggestion of Zarkana.)
Also a visit to the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop which is the pawn store made famous from the cable show Pawn Stars.
And the Bellagio fountains are a nice treat.

You have to be somewhat a fan of the show to appreciate it. You might actually see some of the show's 'stars'. For some that might not be any thrill.

How could I omit Love? Ken is right. A must for any Beatles fan. I could just close my eyes and listen to the show - it's such an experience, almost like you're sitting in the music, hearing it like youVe never heard it before... And yes, the Bellagio fountains are quite enjoyable - I guess I tend to forget because they're a tourist attraction, so we usually avoid them. Speaking of tourist attraction, one which I dig is Fremont Street. http://vegasexperience.com If you like red meat, I personally enjoy Echo & Rig (Butcher/Steakhouse) in a place called Tivoli Village. On the more expensive side, but one of the best steaks I've eaten. If one doesn't indulge in wine or keeps it down to a glass or so, it's entirely possible to enjoy a terrific meal for 2 for less than $150.

The folks that run out of money prior to their return flights from Vegas seem to go see the Hoover Dam. Also, that stretch of road just out of San Fran on 1 is incredible to do during the day time - heading South, it winds down and there are several incredible views off the cliffs. Saw a shark way down below once, cruising in the shallows - not near any people. Sounds like a fun trip, Bob Bone

Seems so. I wanted to go with a guitar playing friend of ours who came to Vegas last years, I thought it would be a great opportunity to finally visit that legendary place you and a few guys here talked about. That's when I learned that they were now requiring appointments. Just too bad. One of the guitar players on one of Cirque show who's been in Vegas for 10 years now also told me that he'd been far from impressed w/ them and their attitude. He recommended Cowtown Guitars instead (I'd heard about that one too from someone on this forum IIRC).

Rain He recommended Cowtown Guitars instead (I'd heard about that one too from someone on this forum IIRC). I still need to get to this store. Maybe next trip. FYI...We have a connection with the mentioned Gold & Silver Pawn Shop (Pawn Stars) to Jesse Amoroso owner of Cowtown Guitars, who is the call-in expert for Pawn Stars when a valuable fretted instrument is being offered to the pawn dealers. He appears to know his stuff. Those are some of the best shows.

The National parks are a must see and then maybe (if we have time) a short drive along the coast. It should be great. Last night I got it started off right...I saw Tom Petty and Steve Winwood!

Vacation is over...and it was awesome! Monday night flew into Vegas and drove to Barstow,CA. Tuesday we went to Sequoia National park, Wednesday Yosemite and Thursday Kings Canyon. Then we drove back to Barstow. This morning we drove back to Vegas, took a few pics and flew back to Arkansas. We got home about a hour ago (10:30pm). The parks may have been the best I've ever been to...simply amazing. I've been all over Colorado and Alaska, but this was truly spectacular.
