Just sharing a new song...

Hey guys,

The name pretty much says it all. The link below goes to my first real project using the program. I'd appreciate anyone giving it a listen. It's a hard rock/metal instrumental. If you listen to it, stick around for the end...the last riff, and solos are one of my favorite things I've ever written. Add a "www" to the beginning. I'm having issues posting links.

I believe it's 20 posts that you need (before you can post links)..........visit the coffee house and join in for some casual time (while piling up the post count).

Metal one, I was able to check out your Youtube link and listened to it. The song itself is very good and excellent chops you got there, however, the quality on Youtube or recording seemed extremely thin (listening on decent H-Phones). It certainly doesn't do any justice to the excellent performance.
What was the general recording/mixing process you did here?

Also, the song just cuts off at the end of the video during the solo......

I liked the rhythm guitar playing a lot. The lead guitar playing while flashy gets maybe a bit boring after a while. To please me I think you need to play more melodically more often. You don't have to try to impress people with fast solos all the time. But that's just my opinion others may quite like it. I must say though that this kind of music is not my cup of tea anymore so that's why I may be a bit too critical.

Ryan, as stated above, your performances are terrific.  The mix, however, needs a little attention.  As far as stereo panning, everything is quite narrow and panned too close to the center.  It almost sounds mono.  Spread out the guitar and drums-not all solos have to be centered.  Put the hihat on one side or the other and make those drums wide.  The overall level of the song is relatively low, but there's not much in the way of dynamics.  Some highs and lows would help this song breathe.  All in all, this is a fine song that would shine with a few tweaks.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Thank you, guys. I appreciate the tips, and the compliments.
I'm still pretty new to the program, so I'm kinda learning as I go. I'll put those tips into action when I do my next song.
I've done some recording with other programs and equipment, but nothing as...expansive as Sonar.

Aside from the overall sound and mix, there were some good ideas and playing in there. For an instrumental though, I felt it needed more in the way of arrangement ideas and changes to sustain it for that length of time. Couldn't detect a bass.

It starts a bit slow until the turbo metal guitar comes in.  It's good playing but the mix is so shallow (the only word I can think of).  I'd sure like to hear it after some of the great mixers up here give some suggestions.  Drums lack punch though they sound good.  Guitar is way back.  I don't know, but there are plenty up here who can help.  You're in the right place.

Re: Just sharing a new song... 2014/10/11 16:40:26 (permalink)
I didn't see it at the time I did the mix, but I get what you guys are all saying. The reason it came out so poorly was, honestly, because of a lack of experience with the program. There were mistakes that I made that can't be undone...

For example, I didn't know that not checking the "FX/Synth Automation" option when mixing would result in all the panning and effects I did being completely removed. I didn't figure out that that was the issue until I was doing the final mix, but by that point, I'd already mixed all the instruments into 1 track each. There were other lingering problems that I had from the start too, that ultimately distracted me. The guitar tone I used when I recorded had WAY too much high end to it, so much that it sounded kinda like musical static. It took a LOT of EQ work to get the guitar to the point where it wouldn't make the listener's ears vomit.

I also didn't make a back-up, so now that I know what I'm doing (well...at least a better idea of what I'm doing), there is just no way to reverse the damage I did to the song, except for recording the whole thing over again. I'm all set on that. That's why I said I'd take all the tips into account of my next song.

You've heard and understood the mixing issues. I like the tune and the shred is killer!
