My New Music Video - "If Only Tonight I Could Sleep"

Hey Everyone!

My new music video is finally here. It's for the track "If Only Tonight I Could Sleep" and is from my album Echoes In The Dark which came out last year. My last two videos went on to do pretty well at festivals and won some awards and now I'm starting to submit this one. It had its premiere at the REEL Recovery Film Festival here in Las Vegas two weeks ago and will screen at the Pollygrind Film Festival later in October.

The track is a dark piece of instrumental electronica which is pretty heavily influenced by The Cure (if you couldn't tell from the song title haha). The video tells the story of a woman in recovery having a day that pushes her strength to the limit. The video was made by a film crew here in Las Vegas called House of DON Productions. I've actually scored a lot of their film projects and we decided to also collaborate on the video and here it is.

I'd love to hear your feedback on the video. And as always, the song was completely done in Sonar.

Thanks!

David

OK, I'll tell you how good this was to me.  As a recovering alky addict (26 years) I teared up at the end when she dumped the glass of wine.  Throughout the video I was yelling at the computer "don't do it" and was sure she didn't hear me.  You should approach NA, AA and all the other A's with this.  Wonderful, though disquieting for me, I loved it all.  The video was shot in HD obviously and is so clear.  The music fits like a glove.  All in all, I LOVED IT!!!

Just commenting on the music - I enjoyed it - at times though the mix was a bit dense, particularly towards the end when the drums come in around 3:20, I think too many sounds fighting for space there.   The mix at the beginning has much more clarity.

Thanks so much Warren, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Our first screening was at the REEL Recovery Film Festival which is put on here in Las Vegas by Central Recovery and people were very touched and inspired by it, especially since the director of the video is someone who went through their program. It makes me really happy that the director and I were able to come up with this idea that has been so well received so far and put it to my music.

And to Ultrabra, thank you. It does get quite busy towards the end, which yea can be a bad thing in some songs but I just felt it kind of added to the drama and confusion and uncertainty. I came up with the name pretty early on while still building the song, and I knew I wanted it to get really crazy towards the end haha.

David, congratulations on this work.  It succeeds on several levels.  I'm reminded of Michael Oldfield by the instrumentation that you used.  This is a huge winner in my book!

Thanks Lynn! Yea I've been learning since releasing my album that, while I'm happy with my mixes... with my mastering, I still have a thing or two to learn about proper overall volume. It definitely comes out a little lower than other things that play side by side. Sounds great when it's turned up though! Haha. :-)

I'm definitely going to make sure for my next album that I get my overall volume better.

    David,

Very powerful music and video, I thought it was all pretty amazing.   I know people who struggle with addictions and can't imagine how difficult that can be.  Your video really portrayed the inner demons and turmoil that is always just under the surface, though dormant, it could surface at any time.  Great work.

Very enjoyable.   The mix sounded great, and the composition kept my attention all the way through with the flow of variation.  The music and video went well together too IMO.

The video looks pretty good, though I don't perhaps have a great taste in video either. But... I probably am the only one in the world who thinks the music sounds all the time about the same, though there are like quieter parts and some variation, but no chorus or other different parts. I'm not very familiar with this kind of music, so I probably am just a bit stupid for not loving the music's style. But perhaps this music style has to be like this. But, the mix is very good in my ears, through good headphones. Also very well produced I think and though it sounds about the same  the whole time the theme sounds very good. Also the sounds are all great. Though now that I remember that this is music made for a video and not vice versa, perhaps this is very good, I just didn't quite get it. Or is it so that because this is music made for a video, the music must not have a  chorus? I just wish there was musical development, but all I hear is promise of something that does not come. But then again, the theme is built in such a way that it sounds difficult to make a chorus on this piece. I believe you have great talent but we like different things.

Thanks SteveC! Glad you liked it.

And thank you kakku for the comments. The changes are pretty subtle but there are basically 4 sections not counting opening/closing. There's the main track, the part where it gets more layered, the breakdown, and then the part towards the end where the heavy drums and echoing synths come in. But yes, it is pretty subtle the changes.

It's not that this kind of music would never need to have big changes and full on chorus sections and whatnot, but when creating the piece in particular it felt right to keep it a steady build. Some of the songs on my album follow a structure like this one, some have more traditional verse/chorus/verse structures (even though it's still all instrumental), and some basically keep growing and adding as they go with no stopping of the groove. My genre is kind of in a weird in between state... Making music for film is certainly my main focus and goal... However I'm not a pen & paper, completely organic composer as I deal with mostly synths and electronic stuff and even use loops here and there (not much... mainly just in drum patterns or some kind of arp or something). And most of my influences are bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails haha. My album is a collection of music that draws from all of my influences, which makes it especially hard to classify. I like the term "electronica" but a lot of times i have to pick between things like "Electronic/Dance" and "Alternative Rock" and it's not really either of those haha.

Anyway, thanks for the comments. I appreciate the feedback. I'm working on my 2nd album now, and I'll definitely keep it in mind.

Sorry did not really watch the video as I was listening to the music which I enjoyed, there are always bits of a tune that you think "I" would mix differently but that is what makes it all so interesting.

    The mix translated well here.

I guess the video is essential for the music. I have a hard time watching videos with my poor eyesight. The music is good and mixed very well. The music by itself seems to lack for me. Not that it's not interesting, without the visual though, it just drones on. I did try and watch the video.

When I watch shows with my wife, she just points out things that are important to the story that's just visual. Ironically, I can recognize actors by voices either by name or another show/movie they were in.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Huh. Very interesting feedback Guitarpima. I'm glad you seem to like it more than you didn't like it. :-) Not being able to watch the video, that's something I have never really thought about... The music does exist on its own on my Echoes In The Dark album though. And like some of us were discussing up above, for the genre I'm working in, which is more of a hybrid of electronica, ambient and film score, the music isn't really the kind of thing that's meant to drive into a typical pop formula or anything. As a matter of fact I've had some situations where I'm asked to make music that does LESS than what this track does... So it's all a matter of what the music needs t be. But it sounds like for the most part you were digging it! :-)

On a side note, I've got a trio of interactive music videos on my website http://www.bydavidrosen.com. They're for other tracks off the same album, and basically are a serious of different colors and effects that react to your mouse movements and clicks, with some pre-designed transitions that go to the music. You might want to check them out in the VIDEOS section of my site. They don't have the dramatic content / story of "If Only Tonight I Could Sleep" obviously, but they're pretty cool and if you have trouble following films / video because of your vision, they may still be potentially enjoyable.

yup...this is something that you're either going to "get it"...or not (kinda like a tarantino movie). I really enjoyed it. You are very lucky to have a film company relationship. I very much enjoy matching DT tunes to visuals and if we had someone local to work with I'd be knee deep in that.

I've heard your work in the past and know that you have a great feel for capturing moods....you excell in that for sure.

    keep it up bro!

thanks so much! yea i really love working with those guys. i should post some links to their films on here. i scored a web series of theirs and 4 shorts so far. they actually just wrapped photography on their first feature film which I'll also be scoring... hopefully it'll be out next year and i'll definitely be spreading the word on that. really excited to get to work on it. and then after that's finished they want to do another music video for me when I'm ready to release my next album. exciting stuff :-)

David I enjoyed watching this. I think the music anchors the video pretty well...I think in the video production  could have been a little more mysterious/engaging by adding some special effects and maybe a few metaphorical images. What I came away with mostly was an argument..I never see her wasted on alchohol so I assumed it was a relationship issue mainly. Am I the only one who wants to hear some kind of lyrics? I kept waiting for something but it never materialized. The music itself is well done. Does seem to plod with no huge changes....maybe reflective of her mood?

I shared a link on my twitter feed..good luck!

Thanks so much for sharing the link Starise! I really appreciate it.

As for the argument, that is meant to just be one piece of what is pushing her. The coin that is shown multiple times in the video is pretty subtle, but that's a coin given during the AA program that signifies her being in recovery. So all these stresses, the getting fired from her job, the sitting through the meetings that she can't stand going to, the car broken down, and last (but most importantly) the cheating husband... Not to give it all away but the reason we didn't want to show her drunk or anything is this is meant to be ONE really bad day for her that almost pushed her to the point of taking a drink again.

Also as for lyrics... I know... Part of me wants to find a vocalist to collaborate with for a future album. I'm just honestly not much of a collaborator (on music that is... I love collaborating with filmmakers and whatnot). So it's gonna be hard, but it's definitely something I want to do at some point. And maybe I'll sing at some point too.  For now though, instrumental it is :-)

I see Ive missed some of the meaning in it...I didn't know about that coin...makes a lot more sense to me now. Thanks for clarifying it.

No problem. To be honest, I only knew about the coin because the director told me haha. I myself am not in recovery, so I didn't know about that either, but it's a great emotional touch that he added. My original idea for the video was the basic same idea, but it was a little more, fantastical, maybe even effects heavy, but due to budget and also the director's experience with the program which made it into a more personal project for him (which I thought was a great idea), we changed things around and made it more character based.
