I am new to SONAR X3 Producer

I am very new to DAWs and recently purchased SONAR X# Producer under the suggestion of a fellow musician friend of mine. I am looking for a tutorial that will, step-by-step, help me to learn SONAR X3 and provide actual projects to learn hands-on with. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

    Welcome to the forums!

I would start with downloading the reference guide (http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013322/SONAR-X3-Reference-User-and-Quick-Start-Guides) It is fully searchable, and there are 9 tutorials at the beginning (with projects included with the X3 installation). Getting familiar with the UI, terms, and functionality is important to have a "good start."

There are numerous Cake TV as well as third party videos, but it is important to try to "work along" with them to help reinforce ideas. For videos, I find it is often better to search a very specific task, so that the time spent is effective.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

For an easier ride please install X3E patch if you haven't already and do a VST reset.

Welcome to the forum.  Try to check out the Cake TV site. Particularly starting with the Configure Audio and Configure MIDI videos in Sonar University.  The information isn't organized in any particularly useful form and it is easy to get lost on advanced/complex topics.  Regardless, these tutorials are a good place to start when you get stuck.

    Welcome to the forum!

I personally keep learning all the time. There's plenty of great material to help you, from the Scott Garrigus book which is quite detailed, to the 9 hr Karl video on X2 that uncovers every rock (available in the Cakewalk store). And lots for free on CakeTV on the Cakewalk website and on YouTube.

But that said, since I've been through miles of this stuff, I most heartily recommend visiting Groove3.com and looking for the Sonar tutorials there. Super nice way of presenting the info in an understandable way, and efficient in terms of time. Eli is an uber pro at presenting how to info.

A gem in the Groove3 materials is called Mixing in Sonar X1. Bill walks you through a song. Even though it's X1 and not X3 it is still fairly current. The sense of going through a song rather than watching or reading about features is what makes this one especially interesting and can get you up to speed.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Also, there are some excellent 3rd-party books written for X3 - Scott Garrigus is the author of one, and possibly Craig Anderton may have written one as well.

The books are an excellent source for well-explained walk through of the different sets of functionality with X3, and they tie it all together with real-world examples - why this setting versus some other setting, and have great approaches to using all of the features.

And then of course, the Cakewalk forums have a bunch of really knowledgeable folks that will bend over backwards to assist you with questions as they pop up while you are learning.

Go for it - we all collectively have your back,

New Sonar X3 user. Old geezer who used to use Pro Audio 9 to create Piano CD's with my Alesis Q8.  (loved that keyboard/sequencer.) Old computer and Alesis both died as I retired. Got new laptop and Yamaha CP33 piano but could not get Pro Audio to load onto laptop.  Just "upgraded" to Sonar X3 and am exceptionally impressed with what it can do and overwhelmed by what I need to learn to do to use it.
My problem is in converting the MIDI file from the CP33 to get an audio wav file out to burn.  I can get from 1 to 2 and 3 to 4, but can't get from 2 to 3.  I don't have an audio interface, but assume I can use the Micro GS that is built into the computer and use the headphone output.  Do I need an audio interface just to record MIDI piano? No audio.
I'm reading, but that adage about an old dog is getting in the way.

You can't really "convert" midi to audio. Midi needs to play an instrument to be heard. If that instrument is your Yamaha then you will need to record the audio from it to create a WAV. But you can also use a virtual instrument. I wouldn't recommend the GS Wavetable synth, but for instance TruePianos or even TTS1 would work. In order to achieve low latency live playing of these instruments you will need an audio interface. But if you can prepare your track using just your Yamaha it shouldbe fine using a softsynth just for the export to WAV.

The SWA and Groove3 videos are excellent learning aids, lots of the x1/2 stuff also applies to x3 aswell so dont get put off by guides and stuff for earlier versions.

No problem Karl, SWA Complete Sonar X2 is so detailed and really helped me move back to cakewalk after many years over on the dark side (cubase). The groove 3 stuff is also good but not nearly as detailed and I wont lie, no offense to the guy but Eli's voice makes me wanna sleep :D

I am new to Sonar. I have used REAPER (sold it), Presonus Studio One (sold that when I the next one) and currently Cubase (for the past year and a half). Don't get me wrong, I love Cubase, but it lacks some basic features for being such a powerful program. Not to forget that I'm not crazy about the way it handles comping and takes. I don't like any of the included effects with Cubase, except for Room Works.

Sonar seems to have some great tools for mixing (and recording too) and that's why I've gotten it. :) I'm on Sonar X3 Producer, by the way.

I was also looking for some tutorials, so this thread is great. :)

    Welcome to it, Vern.

The Cakewalk Forums are REALLY helpful places to go, they just revamped a bunch of sub-forums and such this Monday, but there are a lot of really really good folks in a bunch of the forums who will help you with things you get stuck on :)

When you get up and going, post some of your songs in the Songs sub-forum, and folks will give you good and honest feedback that you can review (or ignore), but it gives folks a chance to hear your stuff, and you can listen to other people's Sonar works too.

Best of it all to you,

Re: I am new to SONAR X3 Producer 2014/10/02 17:09:58 (permalink)
How I did it (aside from harassing the poor fellows here on the forum incessantly):

    1) Download the PDF Manual (which was posted in the second post) and worked through the Getting Started tutorials at the start of the manual. If you installed all the content you received with your discs or download you will have all the sample material needed to work through those tutorials and the tuts will instruct you on how to access them. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND USEFUL STEP OF ALL! Sorry to yell but it really is.

    2) Watch all (or as many as you can) of the vids on the CakeTV section of this site starting with the beginner stuff and working your way up. Some of the vids use older versions but are still extremely useful. Some of those "outdated" vids have little pop up instructions at the bottom of the screen whenever something has changed between the older versions and the newer X series way of doing things (and some of those popups may be outdated now too but if you worked through the tuts already you should be able to figure it out). Right now I'd say the most important video up on Cake TV is the Comping tutorial that shows how to use the new editing systems in Sonar. It moves very fast so watch it a bunch of times, take notes and try it all out. Also be sure to read up and learn how to use the more traditional recording modes (Sound On Sound and Overwrite) for those instances when Comping is just not doing what you want.

    3) Try to read beyond the Tutorial section of the manual a little bit every day. It is a 2000 page manual though so it is a lot of material but most of the really crucial stuff is at the start. When you need a specific answer use Google to search for it with the following search terms before the topic "Cakewalk + Sonar + User Guide + a brief description of what you are trying to figure out eg: "Piano Roll View Input Note" or "Prochannel EQ". They have the entire manual online for exactly this purpose and the online manual is usually more up to date than the downloadable PDF (or at least that used to be the case but they may have both in sync these days). The alternate Google search I do is replace "User Guide" with "Forum" and you'll get a bunch of entries here on the forum that pertain to whatever it is you are looking for.  If that fails you can just start a thread and ask us (even though I'm not around much lately and am kind of a dum dum but these other guys are wicked smart and helpful).

    4) There are indeed some very good third party (paid) tuts out there many of which have been mentioned. The ones I own that have been really useful are the X1 Advanced series by Craig Anderton (lots of cool tips but not really a step by step... he shows you more in depth techniques as opposed to how to do the basics), Sonar X2 FX Advaced Workhop by Karl Rose (FastBikerBoy... this goes into great detail about the FX included with X2 most of which are still in X3 but I wish he would do an updated version for the newer plugs but he also did a full series that IS general tutorial that unfortunately I do not own)... both those are available in the Cakewalk store and go on special from time to time. There is Scott Garrigus' Sonar Power books which are indeed spectacular and are definitely a step by step "how to" guide and reference that are much easier to digest than the rather stale and sometimes quirky manual. He also has an extremely useful website called Digifreq (google it) that has lots of neato stuff and some vids. The other place is Groove3 and they have a crapload of awesome vids on all sorts of music stuff and a month pass is pretty cheap (like 15 bucks I think) and definitely worth it if you can hunker down for a while and take notes on it all. The best Sonar vids on there are done by a fellow named Eli Krantsberg (I'm not sure on the spelling but he is an excellent, easy to understand teacher) and there are some other really good ones from other showing a full mix being done with Sonar.

    5) Time. Just spend as much time as you can poking around at it all. There are menus all over the place in Sonar so get used to where they are, open them up, search the items listed in the manual to find out what they do and try it all out with some of the sample material, loops or your own recordings.

    Welcome and good luck.

I may have missed if someone mentioned this already, but if you can find someone local who knows how to use SONAR and is willing to spend a couple of hours with you it can really make a huge difference in how quickly you learn to use the program.

Someone on the forum may even volunteer if you don't mind posting your location.

    Good Luck,
