October 2nd, 1951

Today is my birthday. It was 63 years ago today that I took my first breath.

That same day, another fellow by the name of Gordon Sumner also took his first breath. Gordon became a musician, too, and was quite successful. Consequently, I see him on television periodically and have watched him age along with me. Strangely, he appears much older, even with the TV makeup.

Of course, I know that's an illusion because every once in awhile I look into the mirror and wonder who the hell that old guy is looking back at me. Truth is, Gordon looks pretty good for his age and always seems to be smiling. I, on the other hand, elicit offers to help me out of the grocery store with my one bag of prune juice. Gordon lives in a castle. Someone probably buys his prune juice for him.

63 is significant to me because that's the age my mother was when she died. I was 40 at the time, and 63 seemed like such a long way off. 23 tax returns later and here I am. I'm treating myself to a colonoscopy in observation of the anniversary.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Happy Birthday, Dave's reflection! I don't know why it is that you age at a faster rate than Dave, but you seem to be doing it successfully. I'm not sure that Dave wants to share his procedure with you, though. I would think that bringing a mirror to the proceedings may raise some eyebrows.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE! Do you have a ritual you do on your birthday to treat yourself? I do. I find time to sit down and enjoy a bowl of ice cream and cake. With lots of icing. I know I shouldn't but it's only once a year. I do it when no one's around. I don't know if it's the sugar buzz but in those moments I reflect on where I'm at in my life at that time and remember the good times that make me smile.

Happy birthday, Dave (I hit 67 next week myself).  As for the colonoscopy, if you have never read Dave Barry's piece on it, you absolutely must.  It's one of the funniest bits I've ever read.

In all, it's the prepping for the procedure that's unpleasant.  The actual procedure is a non-issue.  They give *really* pleasant drugs which unfortunately wear off all to soon after you come to.

Oh Happiest of Cake Day to you Dave. I'm not kidding about the cake. For the last few years on my Cake Day, I stop by a real nice Italian bakery here in town, and get the most delicious and decadent looking cake they have in the case. After a nice dinner, I get a large glass of ice cold milk, slice off a nice big hunk of cake, and have at it. Ya gotta treat yourself once in awhile.
