Staff View in Sonar X3e
The staff view is almost unusable. I say "almost" because I manage to put up with, year after year, the same bugs and new ones. 1. Try clicking on a note when it is below the staff, when the staff size is fairly small. It is almost impossible to right-click on the note the first time. It can drive a person nuts. 2. If you close a file (but not close Sonar) and reopen it again, the order of the staff view track pane gets jumbled. 3. Sonar gets confused when it comes to the note length. If after choosing a larger note value, say a whole note is entered on the staff, then choose a 16th note and enter some notes and now choose a larger note value. i.e. a quarter note. The snap-to function (the one built into the staff view, not the general one on the control bar) doesn't work and you can end up putting a note anywhere. Any time a small note value is chosen and entered on the staff, the staff-view's snap-to function will get stuck at that value and not revert back to a larger note value unless you choose the largest note value possible (a dotted whole) and then click on a large value note, such as a whole note. This is totally unacceptable and a real time-waster. I know Cakewalk can fix these issues if the will were there, but apparently it is not. These long-standing bugs were introduced in X1 and have never been repaired. These bugs, while new, are overlaid upon the inability of Sonar to display tied and dotted triplets correctly and to display 64th notes correctly, which has never been resolved.

I can add another one to your list. 4. Triplet snap is sticky as well. For example: if you insert 1/8 note triplets then switch to 16ths and try to insert a 16th at 240 it always snaps to 320, it does the same thing for editing. Sometimes it doesn't happen but most of the time it does.

It's probably a good idea to create one thread for each bug in these forums if you wish the issues to be reproduced. We now have 4 bugs on one single thread which will be difficult to manage. In regards to steps to reproduce, the more specific steps you supply from a new project the better (ie press this, click that etc)., otherwise we will spending a lot of time second guessing how you actually reprodue the issue. Imagine giving somebody driving directions to a destination unknown who does not know how to drive a car. Cheers.

Alex, The staff view bugs are related, most likely in the same chunk of code that stores the current snap mode as a static. Probably in the logic that lets the user change it. Personally, I like the 16th snap resolution bug (not the triplet bug) because it lets me modify events for a snap setting I'm not currently using, the snap setting should still be independent of the note duration. I usually set the snap mode to 32nd or 16th notes so I can tweak whatever I want to without having the note change its time position. Best

They may be related but we need more detailed steps to reproduce for each one on separate threads please. We are looking at this from a QA and reproducable perspective not code (which none of us have access to so we can't speculate), or whether they are related or not. They are all different issues under the umbrella of 'staff view' although you may brand them as similar. Each bug will have a different issue number which will need to be placed in the subject title if reproduced. It will also be far easier to troubleshoot this way without causing mixups and confusion. We are out to reproduce bugs in these forums before they can be moved onto the developers. 1 thread = one bug submission. Many thanks.

Not everyone experiences the first issue AFICT. It happens on my machine and there is a workaround, sort of. 1. You can zoom in to clown mode, but even then sometimes you can't hit the note successfully. 2. When you right click on the note, notice that the pointer position moves a tiny bit, if you move the cursor back to where it was when you clicked before releasing the mouse button, the edit note dialog comes up instead of the staff view context menu.

I have latest display drivers, Windows updates, mouse driver, etc. These problems have existed since X1 (except the tied-triplet, dotted-triplet and 64th note display issues which have been present since the earliest days of Cakewalk Pro Audio and all versions of Sonar). JG www.jerrygerber.com

Hi Alex, I've been submitting bug reports on these staff view problems for years. I even sometimes get replies back saying I've duplicated the problem report and there is no need to submit another one. And yet, year after year, version after version, the problems still persist. I wish CW would focus more on creating a program that has no new features and instead one that is completely reliable and does what it supposed to do. I realize all software has bugs, but once CW knows about a bug and doesn't fix it and instead adds more and more features, is that really the right approach? JG www.jerrygerber.com

Hi Jerry, I understand you frustration, there have been active measures by Cakewalk being taken, the X3E patch to me shows they are now going the right direction, as are these NEW forums they have set up. So fingers crossed.

I sure hope so. Sonar is a great product, it's a shame that a few long-standing staff view issues would be left unresolved. Sonar has been my DAW since Cakewalk for DOS (circa 1991) and I know that it is in many ways the best DAW on the market. If the developers would only give a little more care to the staff view, the people who use this aspect of the program will be very appreciative. JG www.jerrygerber.com

Jerry, while/until development hits the Staff View, have you considered doing your staff work with either Finale, or Finale's Notepad, and then importing that work into Sonar as needed? Just wondering if that might provide some means of progress for the interim, and the Notepad was free (I had to quality in some way, but doing so was also free, so that was the route I chose). Hi Bob, I don't work like that. I am producing orchestral music meant to be played by sample libraries and software synths. I do all my composing in the Sonar staff view where I am, at the same time, sequencing and doing very detailed MIDI programming (composition and interpretation are, more or less, melded into a single creative experience). So, for me the staff view is essentially a MIDI input/MIDI editing tool. When I am done with a composition I export to Sibelius and make a published-quality score. You might be curious to hear the results: http://www.jerrygerber.com/symphony9.htm Best, Jerry

Wow Bob, that is sweet and worth the drive!!
And yes Jerry has "been" talking about these bugs! And he does do great work. Very good stuff. I am surprised he does this in SV, but evidently knows what he's doing!
And Jerry, Tom this forum has been setup with getting to the root of the problem through user interaction. As Alex states, the problem may seem related, but if enough people on different systems can reproduce the problem, this helps in the developer's pin point where it is.
I am not one for moderating the forums. But on this forum, it's needed. Because if not it can quickly spiral into a four or five page thread that goes in a hundreds of different directions. And turns into something the developers can't use.
To get best results, one problem per thread!! 😊

Grem wise words thanks for the comments. Right now there are a lot of heated debates going on in the corner pub forum as to the process of these forums, the handbook will be revised soon that much is certain. It looks like this thread may be frozen soon (as per handbook guidelines) as we have got a lot of clear steps to repro from it which have spun out onto other threads. Anyway no harm in letting it live a little longer.. Cheers..

Alex, after seeing how this is starting to work out (this forum progressing) I was going to make some suggestions. But if ya'll are already talking about it, I am thinking the team is on it!
It would help if the new set of "guidelines" was posted up on top(sticky). Even though I don't want anymore stickies (a new word?) than are spread there. 😊
Another thought, if when a new thread is started, maybe a pop-up saying that such and such info is needed for thread to be effective before thread is submitted.

Hi Grem
Hmm I thought the handbook was a sticky already... Forgive me I'm on cellphone.
I don't think this forum software is capable of a popup unless somebody mucks around with the templates.
Anyway may I kindly suggest redirecting these comments to the forum discussion forums.
Thanks vm :)
