EWQL not working! do i need upgrade my ram?

I’m having a problem yesterday I did more of the workshop working with dynamics for class. Everything worked great than today I went to work on the file with the cellos and EWQL won’t work period. But if I opened up the project from yesterday everything works. So I called sweetwater the guy didn’t know what to do so I contacted EWQL and he had me uninstall PLAY. Well then the box that said uninstalling crashed so I shut the entire computer off.
EWQL told me I need to upgrade my computer to 16gb of ram my sweetwater sale engineer told me 4 to 8 will be fine. Plus last night I had 4 tracks going at once without single problem. I'm running Windows 8 sonar x2 ewql 64 bit and 4gb of ram. I use this computer for just music.

4 GB of RAM is not much in the 64 bit world. I would probably consider it the minimum even for a basic office PC. I am not familiar with EWQL but most of the big sample based programs tend to be quite RAM intehsive but I think the RAM is a smoking gun.

Never the less EWQL would lead you to beleive it will work with 2GB http://www.soundsonline.com/Symphonic-Orchestra

    PC Minimum Requirements

  • Intel Core 2 Duo, or AMD Dual Core 2.1GHz or higher
  • 2GB RAM
  • Windows XP SP2, Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
  • Sound card with ASIO drivers
  • 7200 RPM or faster (non energy saving) hard drive for sample streaming

    PC Recommended System

  • Intel Core 2 Quad, or AMD Quad Core 2.66GHz or higher
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64-bit Windows/Host Sequencer
  • Sound card with ASIO drivers
  • 7200 RPM or faster (non energy saving) hard drive for sample streaming

EWQL uses disk streaming to get around RAM limitations the other thing to consider is your hard drive. 5400rpm and green drives should be avoided.

    Intel i7 3770K @4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 240GB SSD System disk, 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB (with SSD Cache) HDD. Windows 10,  Sonar Platinum. Roland Quad Capture.

It's a relatively inexpensive upgrade that won't hurt anything and the worst case is it'll improve the performance of sample players. 8GB is probably adequate, but if I were in your position (and could afford it) I'd go for 16 GB anyway. There's a possibility that something else is amiss, but a memory upgrade won't hurt in any case.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention I have the library instead on a separate glyph hard drive. I also wanted to ask my computer says it upgradable to 6gb but if I'm running in 64 bit could I add 16gb? And have the computer recognize it. My computer model is a gateway sx2110g uw38. Thanks

If I'm understanding you correctly you had 4 instances of Play running the other day; and now the same session doesn't work at all. In other words, your computer (4 Gig of Ram) was adequately running the Play engine at some point.

It might not be the ultimate in workflow but 4 Gig of Ram should run (at least) one instance of Play. Good enough to see if your computer plays nice with the Play engine. I know you realize more ram and a solid state hard drive will make the experience a smoother one.

Some East West Libraries include both 16 and 24 bit samples. Try using 16 bit samples if you're not already using them.

You probably already know this. If not:

    1. I assume your re-install of the play engine is completed with no errors.   If not, delete all instances of Play. Make sure the re-install of Play goes without a hitch.

    2. Set the Play engine to 'low streaming': Go to Settings/Streaming; The default is 'normal' I believe. Your system may not be capable of fast or normal streaming.

    3. Start a new Sonar session. Make sure: zero controllers when play stops is unchecked under Sonar Preferences/Project/Midi

Start with just one instance of the play engine and see how it goes.

I had three running a couple days ago and my cpu ran up to 50%. A few days later I did 2 assignments for my college course. Using just 1 PLAY and everything worked. Than the next day I went to do a practice assignment using just 1 PLAY and nothing worked. But if I open an old project like the one the night before everything works.

Yeah i would like to buy some more ram and a intel ssd drive to replace my internal drive.  Would 6gb and a ssd drive help? I know that not big differnce but I have enough for ssd drive and heard there pretty good.

umm which ones are 16 and 24 bit?

    Okay I'll try that thanks.

I did search on my computer gateway sx2110g uw318. Saids i can expand the ram up to 8. I was wrong I thought it was 6gb. So what I'll do is get 8gb and a ssd drive or should I just get the ram 1st?

I'm guessing you have 16 bit samples. When you installed the software you would have noticed an option to load in 16 and/or 24 bit samples. They would be in separate folders.

As far as buying a solid state drive:
When you load a sound into the Play engine how long does it take?
    a few seconds? a minute?

If loading time is only a few seconds or if you don't mind the wait you can get by without a solid state drive for now. I would first get the extra ram and get a stable working environment before adding expensive ssd's.

As I mentioned in my last post the most important thing you can do is to set the Play engine streaming to slow.

Am I missing sounds if I'm using 16 bit? I also talked to my professor he told me by the end of the semester he going to have playing 20 30 tracks. I don't know if 8 will cut it but SONAR dose have freeze track option so I'm sure that will come in handy. I ordered the ram and ssd it'll be here Tuesday. Thanks
