New 3CD Black Sabbath 'Tribute' Album

===============================================================
From Ultimate Classic Rock:

Over the past 20 years, tribute albums have become so common that it’s nearly impossible to find a new way to honor an act. However, the ‘The Many Faces of Black Sabbath,’ which will be released in the U.K. on Nov. 3, takes a unique approach.

As Brave Words notes, the set spreads out 42 songs over three CDs, with each disc having a separate theme. The first, ‘The Players (and More),’ features mostly projects that have involved past and present members of Black Sabbath. This includes Dave Mustaine‘s cover of Alice Cooper‘s ‘School’s Out,’ which had Eric Singer and Bob Daisley. The disc is filled out with a few version of Sabbath songs, such as Vince Neil‘s take on ‘Paranoid.’

The second disc is comprised of metal bands from around the world, including Germany and Argentina, paying tribute to Black Sabbath. Three songs from Ozzy Osbourne‘s solo career, ‘Mr. Crowley,’ ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘Bark at the Moon,’ also appear. ‘The Legacy,’ which closes out the box, brings together many of today’s best-known “stoner rock’ groups, showing the influence that Black Sabbath have had throughout their career.

From Amazon (Record Company Info):

Black Sabbath is, along with Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, the most important British hard rock band of all time. With its dark, mystical and obsessive sound, Black Sabbath built a unique brand that has influenced countless groups since its inception in the late 60s until today.

As usual in our series The Many Faces, we will take you into the fantastic and great world of Black Sabbath. We will revisit his forgotten collaborations, its best songs and the artists (and even music styles) that the band have influenced.

We started with Disc 1, entitled "The Players (and more)" that features musicians who have been part the band. To begin with, who else than Tony Iommi, the founding guitarist and the only member who has been in all the band's formations. Tony is synonymous with Black Sabbath. We also can't forget to mention that this first disc contains potent versions of three classic Sabbath's songs (Paranoid, Children Of The Grave and Hole In The Sky) by rock stars such as Vince Neil (Motley Crue), George Lynch (Dokken) and Californians Racer X and Agent Steel.

Disc 2 is dedicated to the band's greatest songs with versions from countries like the United States, Germany and Argentina. This is just a simple of passion that Black Sabbath generates around the world. And, as a special treat, we allow ourselves the freedom to include three classic Ozzy Osbourne's tracks from his solo career (Mr. Crowley, Crazy Train and Bark At The Moon). These, in versions featuring guitar God Yngwie Malmsteen, Dee Snider (from Twisted Sister), Jason Bonham (son of John Bonham from Led Zeppelin) and core fans Forever Say Die.

Finally, Disc 3 -titled "The Legacy"- features 14 tracks of stoner rock, the underground music genre that was born from the sound of the original Black Sabbath, especially the period between his debut Black Sabbath in 1970 thru Sabotage in 1975. So, bands like Freedom Hawk, Sasquatch or Isaak (among many others) bring back all the mystique and magic that we all love in hard rock into the XXI century.  Now, light a candle, fill your glass with your favorite beverage and enjoy this journey into the darkest corners of the world of Black Sabbath!

If I remember correctly Glenn Hughes never wanted to be part of Sabbath (although he wanted to work with Iommi), he said it would be 'like James Brown fronting Metallica'

Hughes sang on Seventh Star IIRC, which was released under the Black Sabbath name against Iommi's initial intention.

Black Sabbath shares DNA and are connected to so many bands out there, starting with Deep Purple, it's incredible. Like Ray Gillen who sang for Sabbath and then with Jake E. Lee who played with Ozzy after he'd been recruited to play with Dio...

This album rips. Dopamine and Savior Of The Real are my personal favorites.

I agree, and I don't think Iommi's guitar sound has ever been recorded as sweetly as on this album.

I love I Go Insane, a great album closer. Although I think Judas Priest nicked a fair bit of Tony's riff from the middle of the song for the intro lick to this...

'Fused'..good stuff. Listening to that took me here, where Hughes seems to be trying way too hard...

It's OK, but it's no Black Country Communion.

"Black Sabbath is, along with Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, the most important British hard rock band of all time."
That statement must have gotten a few genre fans excited.

OK, Queen's off the list because they did disco for awhile, I get that. And maybe The Who wasn't hard enough to qualify, and ELP used too many chords (although they were louder than any of the Most Important bands).  Cream could be called a blues band, I suppose. But leaving out AC/DC, that's just indefensible.

EDIT: never mind, I just remembered AC/DC is Australian.
