Just Curious - Why Do Some People Not Update from X3[x] to X3e?

I see in a lot of posts where people are using X3b, or X3c, or whatever. I'm curious why someone wouldn't update to X3e. If you look at the changes there are several bug fixes, the update is free, and I don't recall anyone having issues where X3e caused problems that didn't exist with previous updates.

So I'm wondering...is it inertia? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?" Fear of the internet? Not knowing the update is available and free? An irrational hatred of the letter "e"? Inquiring minds want to know...

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

There are many folk who only come here when they have a problem. They may have been using X3b since release without problems and spent their time creating music.
Then an issue pops up that they can't deal with so they come here for help.

While my Sonar is up to X3e, I'm sure I have a lot of plugs that aren't up to date on version fixes simply because I don't have the time to spend trawling manufacture sites to check.

It is a good argument for auto-updates, but what about the version fixes that break more things than they fix?

    Auto update notification ftw

Most people buying software don't expect all the patches etc

Some do not realize, Cakewalk only makes one set of original disks and downloads. This is the product which is purchased. Cakewalk does not apply updates to the disks or downloads. Updates are only available from the support page. Some recent buyers assume they are running the most current version when in fact they are running the original release.

Or this is the same mindset of people that believe that they don't need to update their windows or drivers for that matter to fix broken things or quarks, not only not updating Sonar, but all programs, etc. on their computers.
as the saying goes, most people will believe in, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it":)
I'm for one that believes in updating most everything...:)

+1 to the auto update comments. Without manual searching or forum reading, the average consumer may still be running X3a.

There are "Check for Program Updates" and "Download Latest Help File" options in the Help menu. True it is not automatic but some would advise turning automatic updates off on a DAW.

It's probably for the same mixture of reasons that people don't update their operating system, apply security patches to anything, never update their anti-virus definitions... Ignorance, fear, laziness, misunderstandings and sometimes plain self-defeating pig-headedness.

Which in turn leads to software companies installing updaters along with their products which run in the background and do their thing whether you want them to or not.

My hypothesis is that it is a result of the Sonar 8.5 resistance movement and the early issues with rolling out X1 and its new features.  There were a lot of issues with the X1 releases and, depending on what features caused a particular user grief, you could be better off staying at a lower patch level.  This was a rather disruptive period for a lot of users who found that problems (even behavior changes) could be introduced in sub-versions and the new sub-version features and functionality.

My experience since X2, however, has been that the sub-releases have been much better focused on addressing problems instead of changing DAW behavior.  I have made it a point to apply new patches as soon as they have been made available (from X2 on).  My advice to anyone currently is to patch early and often.  I do not recall a problem being introduced in any of the patches since X2a, but each has solved numerous problems in the main release.  This was not the case with X1.

Patch early and often, but backup before you do!

I think a lot of people who are afraid to patch don't have backup strategies.

Ah, backups and the lack of the same.

I once worked with someone who lost their entire Master's thesis a couple of months before the submission date thanks to a hard drive failure. Restore from a backup copy? They were "far too busy, busy, busy to have the time to waste doing backups".

I'd be more curious why anyone would still use X2. I honestly can't see why one would hesitate to update to X3e, even coming from X2, because of the sales.

Some may not if they're in the middle of a session and are not willing to chance losing something in the process. I'd be most concerned with that (my hard life experiences with software in general). What works can hardly be argued. What should work is not typically convincing to me.

Another reason... There are those that keep their DAW off the internet, so even an auto-notification that there's an update would never work.

Actually, the nature of these responses is giving me an excellent clue. Most replies are theorizing about why others don't update. As Karyn mentioned, many people come here only if they have problems, so they might not even know there's an update available. Then when they come here and say "I'm having this problem with X3b" they find out there's a newer version.

Yup an auto update in Sonar would be a nice option. Of course again if you are offline...

We get lots of problems with people who are offline unfortunately, generally because windows update has not been run or drivers out of date.

An interesting related note.... My PreSonus audio interface (in my sig) was recently declared End Of Life by PreSonus. They will not update the driver to Win8. Though I'm told it works with the Win7 driver.

When asked what we should do when we need to upgrade to Win9 or 10 or whatever, the official line was "It works perfectly in Win7, keep your PC as it is..."

So, when Sonar no longer supports Win7, just as XP is not officially supported, I will have no choice but to stop upgrading Sonar. Either that or throw out all the expensive hardware in my studio and replace with... Well there isn't anything on the market that does what my system does. Not even presonus makes a replacement.

Thanks for reminding me, My signature still said 8.5.

And I'll put my hand in the air and declare that my DAW is always offline once it's been built and up and running smoothly. First there is no internet in my attic studio, second it's never been an issue for me, third I pay $10 a gig for bandwidth so any updates add to the cost of my software budget. X3e seems as solid a release as 8.5 was so I guess I'll plan on staying put another 5 years.

My W 8.1 office computer is mostly in the hands of Microsoft and it seems to work fine, but I have it set for me to pick which updates are installed. I will review the list and delete crap that is not relevant to my system.
