How does this master sound?

Hey guys,
I'm always second doubting things and I have a hard time trusting other people so I just wanted to check with you if the master of this track is good or not. I've raised the volume on the mix and I'm not letting you know which is the master and which is the mix.

Personally I think the master sounds better, but that doesn't really tell me if it's a good master or not.

Out of the two I find that 2a-1 has more air and openness in the feel/sound of the mix, listening on the A7x's.

I would pick 2a-1 but they are both very close.  Sounds good. The rap is really pretty good.

I actually forgot which is the mastered one, lol.

Oh well, regardless of that, isn't it problematic that the mix and master are very close to each other? I mean, my mastering engineer is asking me if I'm happy with it and it's really hard for me to tell because I don't really know what to expect. Over the years I've been using several different mastering engineers but I'm still pretty much clueless on what to expect from a master.

The second mix is much better IMO.  The bass is tighter and the vocals seem to have more stereo spread.  There is a little more sparkle on top too.

    Thank you, guys.

Any of you got some really bad in ear phones or some bad speakers. Cuz I was listening to a couple of famous tracks and compared to them I feel my master is losing alot of quality in the crappy in ear phones I have. I'm feeling it's not as well adapted to crappy systems as it should be.

That is funny illerill!  If your mix is losing quality on crappy systems and that is a concern, then you might have to make a decision on what audience is most important to you.
All my stuff seems to sound crappy on crappy systems.
I at least try to make it sound good on an iPod or iPhone with $20 ear buds. Anything less than that I don't care.

Yea, 20$ ear buds is what I have. I'm thinking that's what most people use.

I was just wondering if you could listen to the master with those crappy ear buds and give me your opinion on it. I already wrote to my mastering engineer about it but it's like I never feel confident enough to trust my own ears.

It is odd to work backwards and get rid of the good equipment so that we can tell you how it sounds on crappy equipment.  Nothin bad meant but I don't like to listen to music on laptop speakers or cheap earbuds, etc.  I certainly wouldn't critique on them.  Look up, illeril, not down.  You have talent.

I prefer No2. There seems a bit more 3D space in the mix, and vocals are a touch more up front. Listening in HD380 pro's. Nice rapping and a really good song!

Haha, well I hear you. I don't like listening on laptop speakers either nor do I prefer my cheap earbuds over my expensive system, but the way I hear my music I want other people to as well and I believe most people use crappy systems.

Thanks :) I constantly strive to improve hence I'm never satisfied and always questioning. Maybe I sometimes question things a bit too much. It can't be easy working with me :P

Anyway thanks for all the replies. I will repost this track in about a week together with a video I've recorded.

The second version sounds like the better one, to me.  As far as making your mixes sound good on poor systems, that's mainly in the mixing stage and not the mastering stage.  You need to listen on the playback system you're shooting for before the mix goes to the master engineer.  If you can't, then you might consider something like the ARC 2 system or the Focusrite VRM box for monitoring because they give you the opportunity to listen on various virtual playback systems.  Either way, you're doing a decent job as is.

    All the best,

Sounds pretty well done to me (v2).   It seems to have the right feel and attitude for the style.
