[RESOLVED] New monitor (visual) concerns for Sonar.
Hi folks I've had a two monitor set up for quite some time - a newish 24 inch and an old 19 incher (not widescreen). Yesterday I made a shelf for my "music" desk and in putting things back I broke the stand off of the old monitor (it had had a good life so it wasn't too much of a heartache when it went in the trash). Anyhoo, I'm left with the 24 incher and that isn't enough. The way I see it I can go up to a 27 incher but at my budget it won't be some supadupa high res one or I can go with a 22 inch second monitor (but no bigger due to space). I found using Sonar on one "small" screen rather difficult as I couldn't split the mixer and alt tab between views like I can using Reason so one screen is tricky but a larger one may work. Anyone out there using a single 27 inch screen and getting on okay or do I go for the smaller second screen? Grum.

Personally, I'd go for the second monitor option

Yes I would go for a 22" wide screen or a wide screen 24 ". I have two 22 "wide screens and I love them. Make sure you have plenty of graphics card memory.

Cheers guys. I have a beasty graphics card so that isn't a problem. I must say the second monitor is slightly ahead but I still haven't dismissed the single big one yet. If a 24 incher fitted my shelf it would be a no-brainer but two 24 inch monitors is quite wide....around 48 inches wide by my reckoning . Grum.

I found using Sonar on one "small" screen rather difficult as I couldn't split the mixer and alt tab between views like I can using Reason so one screen is tricky but a larger one may work.
Here are to ways to toggle between a full track and console views: 1) With the console view in the multidock using the keyboard shortcuts D and SHIFT+D 2) With the console view undocked from the multidock - click the icon in the upper left of the floating console and select "Disable Floating"
- maximize the console or track view inside SONAR
- toggle between the views using ALT-1 and ALT-2

Good news (maybe). I just realised that a 24 inch monitor is not 24 inches wide (obviously that is obvious as it is the hypotenuse rather than the adjacent but I hadn't put the theory into practice). Two 24 inch monitors are not 48 inches wide so the possibilities have increased. Good stuff!
Grum.

Plenty. I work on one 23" widescreen so it helps to know how to work with Skylight. Screensets are another option for more complex screen layouts. For simple switching between views stick to the methods described above.

You need to also consider the resolution of the "27 incher" compared to your current 24" monitor. If the 24" is 1920x1080 and the 27" is 1920x1080, you aren't gaining any desk area (the image is just larger).

Yes resolution is important. A very high resolution may result in objects being too small. Using the control panel to make the screen easier to read may negatively affect SONAR.

When running Sonar on a laptop, the D keyboard shortcut is great - flip between full-screen track view and full-screen console with a one keypress. While you're in the console, you can also tab through the different multidock windows. The only major limitation I find with the laptop is the control bar's inflexibility.

I wouldn't use sonar without two monitors. Well I would, but you know what I mean ;)

Cheers guys, it's all sorted. Once I did the maths I shot out and got a second 24" monitor and everything is rosey in the GrumbleStudio. Mrs Grumbleweed is owed a monstrous amount of payback due to the silly week I've just had but if we all send out feelings of goodwill I'm sure everything will balance out . Grum.

Uh huh... Dual 24" rock. Try stretching the SONAR window across both monitors and use the shortcut keys above to move between views. Sweet.

That probably works better if both monitors are close to being the same height. I can't claim to have achieved that . Grum.

I wish I could get away with using one screen but alas I just couldn't handle it after all these years with two. My problem is that I have my monitors either side of the main screen (they'd be way too far apart if they were either side of both screens) and this means my second screen is way off to the right and angled inwards, which isn't too bad I suppose but it does make for more neck swiveling.
I even thought about installing the second screen above the first one, but I think that would feel incoherent when dragging the cursor between screens, and besides I have a friend who tried a setup like that and ended up having to have physiotherapy on his neck.

I have my Rokits on the outside of the screens but angled inwards. I only have to move back a little to sit in the sweet spot and being forward of it whilst recording/editing/mixing doesn't do any harm. I couldn't live with any other set up as the aesthetics would be shot to pieces!
Grum.

scook A very high resolution may result in objects being too small.
I think you missed my point. A high resolution doesn't neccesarily mean the objects will be small. It is the combination of resolution and screen size that determines relative default size of (as you say) screen "objects" (i.e. the pixel density per area). For instance: a 1920x1080 22" has about the same pixel density per area as a 2560x1600 30", but the 30" is a higher resolution monitor and has about twice the real desk space of the 22". My point was: not knowing the resolution of his original 24" monitor or the resolution of the proposed 27" monitor, it is impossible to know if he will gain any real desk space with the larger monitor.

I understand how screen size and resolution interact. I was making a different point about high resolution monitors and SONAR.

Same here - I have my 5" Rokits on wooden stands about a foot outside of the dual screens. Works nicely.
