General MIDI reset (GM Reset)

I found a tip for adding a GM Reset string to the start of a song, but the method is unclear.  It seems (I'm guessing here) that you have to load the supplied file with the GM  reset sysex in it, but my guess is that you have to load that file as the initial file and then add tracks from there.

What I want to do is to bring a (supposedly) GM song into Sonar to clean it up, and to be able to insert the GM Reset string into measure one on channel one, as proscribed for any song file.  First, is the procedure correct where you load this special file first, or can it be added as an afterthought?

Is the another way to manually insert the GM reset string into an existing file.  You used to be able to do this in Pro-Audio before Sonar came along.
