Reducing .wav file size > CD?

I want to put some old "speech only" recordings I have on tape to CD. Of course I need the final wav to be 44/16 to put on audio CD but is there some way to reduce the size of the wav somewhere in the process? I want to fit as much as possible on a CD. {As I write this I'm thinking its a dumb question.. but what the heck!!}

Thanks!

    if you want to make a CD that will play in any CD player (or most CD players, I guess I should say) then you are stuck with the 74-minutes or 80-minute limit based on the type of CD-R. There's nothing you can do to the wavs to make them smaller files if an audio CD is what you want to make.

    An alternative would be to make a CD of MP3s, which will only play on CD players that play mp3s. MUCH less universal, but you can fit SOOOO much more.

    That is correct. CD is 44.1/16bit stereo. There is no other playback spec that a normal CD player will do. If it's going to be played back on a computer the sky is the limit on formats you can use anything you want and just make a CD-ROM or it. But an audio CD is fixed at the one sample and bit rate of 44.1/16bit.

    Thanks guys. "twas as I suspected but I was hoping that there was a way to "reduce the resolution" like we do with graphics to get the file smaller.
    Oh well.........

    i know a wav compressor call idealshare videogo which can easily reduce wav file size, it even can compress AIFF, AU, APE, MP3, PCM, DTS, Apple Lossless, RA, WMA, AAC, AC3, FLAC, OGG, CAF, and etc.

    It not only compresses wave files, it'll remodel your kitchen and provide a fake passport for any country you like.
