transfer track from one project to another?

Is it possible to transfer a track from one project to another?
For example, if I wanted to take a drum track in one project and create another project and use that same drum track, is there a way to do that?

Thanks!

If you have SONAR set up to open more than one project at a time (in preferences - see post #6 below for detail), the simplest method is to open both projects and copy the relevant tracks from one to the other.

Edit: Included comment to post #6 below.

I don't know how to open more than one project at a time (used to be able to do that in previous SONAR versions).
However, you don't really need to do that. Just select the whole track, COPY and PASTE it into a track in your new project.

I should have been clearer... You can certainly open more than one project at a time. I just don't know how to put them in different windows so you can drag & drop.

Hi Greg, I knew you were going to ask that since I replied from my phone! LOL

In Edit->Preferences, ensure the "Advanced" button is selected at the bottom. Then on the left edge File->Advanced.
There is an entry near the center called "Allow Only One Open Project at a Time"... verify that this in unchecked, and you can open more than one project within SONAR.

You could select whatever midi and audio tracks belong to the drums you want to save and use in another project, then create a Track Template.  This would take all of your selected tracks, any associated routing assignments, any associated soft synths, and settings for all of the above, and save it to wherever you would like.  Then you could insert from that same Track Template later, in another project.

The thing though, is that the midi DATA for any midi track included in the selected tracks that MAKE the Track Template will NOT be saved as part of the Track Template.

That is not a problem, however, as you can SUPER easily take the midi data for any track, highlight all the midi clips in that midi track, then simply click and hold on that midi track and drag the selected clips off of Sonar to your desktop, and it will create a midi file of that selected data - just like that.  Poof - Ta Da.  (I got married like that once - still don't know what hit me).

Then, if you wanted to import that midi data back into your new project, just insert your track template first, then click on the desired midi track and click on File>Import>Midi and navigate to wherever your saved midi file lives and double click on it to bring it in.

I hope any of that helps,

There are several ways to transfer tracks:
    • Drag and drop from one open project to another.
    • Copy and paste from one open project to another.
    • Copy from a project, close the project, open the other project, paste.
    • Export a file and import it.
    • Drag the file into the media browser, then drag it back out into the other project (this is a very powerful feature)

    • Open the other project's audio folder in the media browser and drag the wav into the new project.

Thanks, everyone, for your help!   I really appreciate it!
As far as just copying a track, closing the project, and then pasting the track in another project, I tired that a couple of times.   It does not work.

    Thanks again!

I just did it to confirm, it does indeed work. Maybe a different track was selected and it pasted out of range of what you were seeing?

This does indeed work. I do it all the time.

Also dragging into the media browser is a great way to transfer stuff.

Open the first project, then in the upper right corner  of the first project click the minimize botton (-) ,there will be two, click the second one,you then should see the project minimized in sonar then open the new one and minimize it also, you should see both projects at the bottom left of sonars profect window minimized, bring up the first project and copy the track you want to transfer, minimize the first one, maximize the second one and go to the menu bar at the top click Edit-Paste.

Depending on the track count of the project one relatively easy way is also to delete all unwantef tracks from the project and save under a new name with "copy all audio" checked. At least that makes sure that everything, envelopes and whatever there can be, will be included.

When trying that copy-paste, did you close SONAR to open the new project (as I understood you didn't know how to have two projects open)? That might erase the clipboard.

Yes, I copied, closed, then opened a new project.  That does not work.

When closing, you are just closing the project right? Not closing SONAR. Closing SONAR will lose the copy buffer contents.

I have found - at least for me - that when opening new projects wiithin Sonar, keeping Sonar open makes it sluggish, for whatever reason.   I don't know if anyone else has experienced this or not.   That's why I close Sonar and reopen projects.   It just runs easier.

But you only need to keep it open long enough to copy the file. Then you can save the project with the pasted file, and close Sonar and re-open if you like.

Even easier: Save as - give it new name. Delete everything but the drums on new file - done.

I don't think that works. That would link all the audio data of the old project to the new one. You need to delete everything unwanted first, before saving under new name, as I wrote in my previous post. Deleting the tracks does not delete the audio in the audio folder.

    My experience:

Tracks do not copy.  Audio/midi data does.
Tracks to not export/import. Audio data does. (and midi, and groove clips,...)

None of the track settings copy/export/import.

!!!!   If you can do this please explain how.   !!!

Been asking for this forever. Like since 1999.

Should be able to save track templates with data.

Should be able to combine projects.

Based on my limited experience of such copying, I agree. I just blindly assumed that there's a way in the X-series to copy-paste tracks with all the settings, envelopes etc., as the experienced forum members suggest it. I'm still in 8.5.

You're correct, I was sloppy in my language and used "track" and "data in the track" interchangeably.

The only way I know of to copy a track, its parameters, and its data from one project to another is to save the track as a track template and copy the data into that.

It would be unbelievably useful to be able to copy a track and everything that goes with it to another project.

Example: if you had a soft synth part, it would be great to copy the track, the soft synth (VI), and all settings to another project.

    Konradh,

The synths are usually not actually part of the track.

Interestingly, you can include them in a track template, so Craig's suggestion of a Track Template still works. You could export the track and audio to track template and import it into any number of projects you like.

It will come with all the stuff, FX, Synths, whatever. It will route to the same busses it did in the original.

Seems pretty close to what you're asking for to me.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Re: transfer track from one project to another? 2014/10/19 23:02:57 (permalink)
Reading this thread gave me an idea for a different way of copying clips between projects. I had been opening both projects, copying the desired clip, switching to the other project using the Window menu, and then pasting.

I realized that I could use the button between the maximize and minimize button to size the track view of both projects so that they can fit side by side in Sonar. Then it's easier to drag and drop.

It would be even better if there was some way to undock the track view and drag it to another monitor.

Yup - the Track Template saves all but the clip data, and it all shows up when you insert from the Track Template.  I use Track Templates all the time, and they are great time savers for me.

You cannot undock the track view but I believe you can stretch SONAR across both monitors and move one of the track views to the other monitor that way.

Clear away everything and show the desktop
    Windows logo key +D
Use this shortcut when you want to minimize a lot of open windows at once to check something on your desktop. Clutter-to-clean with two fingers.

    Manage open windows
Chances are, you use your PC to do a lot of things at once. Shortcuts go a long way towards cutting the clutter. Go ahead and try these out as you read about them.

  • Switch between open windows
    Alt+Tab
If you have lots of open windows and you're not sure exactly which one you need, press Alt+Tab, and get a quick thumbnail view of all open windows. Then, while holding down the Alt key, press the Tab key multiple times until you get to the window you want.

  • Minimize the window
    Windows logo key +Down Arrow
Minimizing a window is a surefire way to see what's underneath it. And it's fast to use the shortcut. If the window is maximized already (covering the entire screen) it'll go to “normal” size. And if it's normal size, it'll minimize entirely.
  • Maximize the window
    Windows logo key +Up Arrow
Maximizing windows works the same way.
