I have a new Roland Studio Capture on the way

Occasionally I need more than 8 mic inputs when recording.  I ran into that again two days ago on a recording, I needed 10 but only had 8.  I've been looking at other USB interface devices for a while, including MOTU, RME, etc and none fill the bill with the number of mic preamp inputs.  Some of the  units only have 2 or 4 mic preamp inputs and require external mic preamps.   The Studio-Capture has 12 XLR mic preamps.

I have an Octa-Capture but not sure if another Octa-Capture could be daisy chained and both used.  With the new Studio Capture I will have the 12 XLR mic preamp inputs, plus 4 more line level inputs which should give me all that I'll need.  I can move the Octa-Capture to the "backup" unit.

Looks good, nice to have the DSP for cue mix, wonder if there's some basic compression too?
I like just a tiny bit at a fast attack for capturing any potential overs with singers who mostly seem to have bad mike technique.
Bit pricey but I guess if it has everything you need then worth it.
I keep my Tascam just in case I need more than 6 inputs. I can do 16 with it for $300 it was the best bang for the buck input wise, to bad about the so so drivers.
I'm eyeing up the new Tascam http://tascam.com/product/uh-7000/
As my next interface. Waiting to hear about the new improved drivers that Tascam will soon be working on from Greg. I really need to retire my Yamaha 01V.

    Nice one fireberd!

I have one myself and it is very reliable. I bought a snake/loom thing and have been recording various combos thru it to great effect. Hope you have as much luck with yours as I have mine.

Roland seem to be very reliable with their drivers which is very nice too.

The manual clearly explains the procedure to daisy chain two Octa-Captures (can't refer you  to the page as the manual is in the studio). You end up with 16 pre-amps. Cheaper as well.

No, I didn't read the manual.  Actually that was just an afterthought comment I made. I never really considered running two Octa-Captures.  I should not have made that comment since it really was not a considered option especially since I've been looking at upgraded units the past several months.  If it weren't for the lack of built in mic preamps, I probably would have went for an RME.

The mic-pres are even better on the Studio-Capture. The same thing can be said about almost everything.
Two Studio-Captures can be daisy-chained aswell, the day you outgrow it.

I Think you'll like it! I made the same switch myself.

    Best Regards

Ludvig, thanks for the encouraging words.  The unit is scheduled for delivery tomorrow (Tuesday).  From what I read, it is an "improved" model over the Octa-Capture.

There was an old post that mentioned the failure of daisy chaining 2 Octa-Capture, after upgrading the firmware. One reason that's holding me back to go Octa.

There were problems for some back when the Octa-Capture first came out, with an update, but from what I remember that was resolved.  I don't remember any comments about problems here, but I do remember some on the Avid (ProTools) and gearslutz forums.

Well, the Studio-Capture has been installed.  No problem with the install and all channels test out.  Although there are some different or changed features, it is relatively "painless" since I'm familiar with the Octa-Capture.

I have to do some bass and pedal steel guitar tracking today.  I'll "initiate" it.

After 6 days, I'm still happy with the new Studio Capture.  I did some "keeper" voice tracks today and no problems.

    Hello,
With my two octa-capture interfaces and Sonar platinum, I only can work with "octa-capture" and "octa-capture exp" if i choose ASIO. When setting WDM, the "octa-capture exp" is no longer recognised by Sonar.
Is there anybody here who works with two octa-capture (or two studio-capture) and can give me an amswer.
    Thanks
