Thanks to Danni's guidance, I've got an Axe FX II XL and it has shown me that modelling can do the job and do it very well.

I just listened on my Hafler/Auratone rig.

I thought the clean sound on number 3 was the closet thing to the sound of an amp alive in a room. 1 and 2 could work in a mix but they aren't going to make a kid want to play guitar. ;-)

I listened again to the dirty examples; 1 and 2 sound choked and dead... each in a different way. 3 sounds choked but not dead... there's a spark of life in it.

I think the guy has some nice clean chops.

I'm jealous. I would love to try a Axefx II, but it's hard for me to justify with my current cash flow. So far S-gear has got me very close to where I want to be, but I'm always looking for the next thing. Hopefully I'll be able to put Bias through it's paces this weekend and if I like it I'll buy it. I don't need a ton effects with a sim. I have a ton of effects in my vst folder. Again if I want a simple fender clean thing...Amplitube Fender can do that all day long.

I wouldn't use a preset from the Axe-Fx Ultra for a test. Most of the presets were done to show extremes rather than 'go to' studio sounds. I've got the Axe-Fx and don't use any of the presets and I'm usually a preset kind of guy. Some are just plain bizarre to show the scope.

The Axe-Fx 2 has, as far as I know, some presets from users, which are more user friendly. The standard and ultra were never plug in and play.

I would say the same about most of the amp sim presets as well. Most are set up to extremes and the user presets can be much better.

Clint, let me know what you think of BIAS when you give it a work out. I don't gig out much any more these days either, if I do, I use the real deal. The Sims are really handy for songwriting, however.

Re: A software Kemper?! 2014/10/30 16:39:35 (permalink)
I've finally re-installed S-Gear yesterday and played with it for a while. But as great as it sounds, I've come to develop an aversion for plug-in amp sims. Even if it sounds incredibly good, I don't think I'd be using BIAS much, so I'll save myself the hassle.

I think pretty much all amp sims have their strength and weaknesses. Last weekend, I recorded some guitar parts for a piece of music in the genre of Nine Inch Nail's Broken - huge sounding tracks, w/ plenty of gain. I had the tone nailed to perfection w/ the POD HD's Engl model. That was actually the most satisfying experience I've had w/ my POD HD so far.

On the other hand, I've been trying to tackle a certain type of smoother rock and roll sound for quite a bit, and it just won't work. Actually, I don't think anything short of a real tube amp at high volume in a big room would work 100% for this. It's not just a matter of tone/EQ/sound - that part can be taken care of relatively well -  it's a matter of energy, gain, sustain, density.

The AXE FX and Kemper are both way too expensive for my taste, but a friend of mine just bought a used Eleven rack, and he's got me comparing that and the POD HD, and I truly believe that the Eleven would be a much better solution for me than the POD. If I had any money to put on amp sims, that's where it'd go.

I didn't like the Elevenrack at all, but we are all after different things. I had a HD500 for 4 years and I think it's better than the 11 in every way. FWIW I had some really good tones with the POD as is, but even better using Redwirez IRs. I don't know if you've tried those or not, but I do suggest trying some out. They have a few for free to try.

Yep - I have practically the whole collection. I'm a long time fan of their MixIR too.

That's the thing with amps and amp sims - I've seen people getting amazing results using almost each and every one of them, so I can't really put any one of them down, because someone is bound to have created something running with it and to prove me totally wrong.

Overall, from my perspective, Eleven appears to be less mix-ready, which is exactly what I want. Anything that's too good sounding, polished and balanced usually doesn't work for me. Comparing the same amp types and setting, Eleven sounds more raw, with mids that are less tamed than the POD. To me, that's something that has a lot of appeal.

That's about the size of it. There's loads of examples of amp, software and fx processors all doing great things and they can all virtually sound the same when manipulated.

If your dream rig is a $9 app or a $3000 fx unit then it doesn't really matter.

It's best to hoover up the software via sales and KVR and the apps are as cheap as chips.

Rather than manipulate software, I quite like their subtle differences. Playing guitar is fun and that's the bottom line. I'm lucky, as I have no idea what all the great amps sound like anyway because I've never owned them.

I liked the Bogner amps in the Elevenrack. I can't remember what they are called. I think I was too used to the HD500. I agree they all are getting pretty good! And that's great for us. I wish I had this stuff when I was in my 20's and had to save and save for every little thing.

I have guitar amps I bought in my twenties. I've used them for 30 years and I can sell them tomorrow for 2x-3x what I bought them for, but at the moment I'm planning on playing them for another 20 or 30 years.

I played the same Fender Twin Reverb II for about 30 years and finally sold it a couple of years ago. It was a 1983. The last Paul Rivera Fender I believe. A very underrated amp.

I've had 3 Fender Twins... that's an amp that will drive a guy to try an amp sim.

There is a reason the *vintage* Twins currently sell for about half the price of the smaller and more versatile *vintage* Deluxe Reverb amps.

My first "pro" guitar rig.

Fender 59 Bassman, a cry baby, a genuine tube drive and my black US standard strat.

Between that and the Marshall, there's very little I couldn't accomplish with clever mic placement.

I'm interested in knowing. The ones who want to buy BIAS are not saying if they want the full $200 version or the basic $99 version. Hands, please?
Unless you are in a position to have access to a lot of different amps to capture, I don't see much advantage to the $200 version. Can you not load amps that were captured in the full version to play in the little version? In that case, you could download from the cloud. Right? Just asking!

I thought the video explained that there were a lot more basic tweaking options in the $200 version, but it seems like the $10 iPad version is the hot ticket.

I had an Eleven Rack.
The build quality was great.
For higher gain distorted sounds, the unit was *very* noisy.

If you're talking a hardware unit, the Boss GT-100 is pretty nice.
Although it's not an Axe-FX or Kemper, it sounds better (IMO) than any other hardware based amp-sim (including POD-HD).  Very convenient unit for direct recording... or zero volume practice
With the dual displays, the GT-100 is pretty easy to tweak/program.
Check it out (if you haven't already)...

I"ll definitely check it out. One of the things I do like quite a bit about the POD is the software editor, but I see that the GT-100 has one that's even better, or t least, which looks a lot easier to read.

A shame that BIAS has geared their demos to the shredder market, because while I like to "shred" from time to time when no one is looking, my ideal sound is that clean/slight breakup type sound. BIAS is great for that.

I love metal, but I often feel like it would be awesome if people who make software didn't let their musical preferences dictate their decisions and broadened their horizons. There's a lot of products that I like but can't use for anything unless I'm working on some kind of metal, and with a very specific type of sound.

Even amp models and drums samples which are supposedly designed for other genres - they're just so obviously designed to satisfy the hear of a certain genre of metal fan. They're like a metalhead's vision of blues rock or jazz or whatever.

This is my issue with the AxeFX. I'm sure it's awesome at other styles of music, but the demos/videos/youtube clips etc. that show off it's non-metal side are few and far between.

I would go for the $99 version personally. Still like the ipad version though.

Incidentally I was wondering what everybody is using as an interface for their amp sim software? One of the reasons I first started using the ipad was for the low latency. At least lower than my guitar -> Focusrite audio interface -> SONAR. Does anyone else have a latency issues? My timing is bad enough to begin with, I don't need latency adding to it. lol.

I use my RME interface with amp sims in SOANR. At 64 buffer within a 24/44.1 project I get about 5.4ms roundtrip latency (as reported by SONAR in asio mode). That usually does the trick for me.

Of course if I have a VSTi or three going I usually have to freeze those guys to get that low in the RME.

I use a Focusrite Scarlett (on Mac, though, but essentially, it should behave similarly, imho) - buffers go down to 32 but I usually keep them at 64.

From memory, I'm getting something along the lines of 5-7 ms in terms of latency.

I know I don't shred like Paul Gilbert but I've never noticed latency, which must be over double what you chaps get. Perhaps my ears have latency correction?
