I've never used other DAWs :o)
Right in the beginning, when I realised how complicated an entity a fullfeatured DAW is, I decided I'm not
going to distract myself with jumping between DAWs. That is, unless there's a really good reason. Such a reason hasn't popped up yet.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

It allows me to work the same way I have for the past 30+ years and treat the whole experience as if I'm still in a studio with a big desk, 2" tape machines and a rack of FX on a patch bay.

I know other DAWs try to do that, but they either give the impression you're doing data entry in an accounts package or the workflow is so illogical I struggle to do anything at all.

Maybe I'm just old and set in my ways, but Sonar is so easy to get damn good results from.

    Can't do just one...

    1. Has the best forum.
    2. Less clicks to get from point A to point B, so I get things done faster.
    3. Can handle a really wide range of projects. I've done narration, remixes, audio-for-video, straightforward recording, songwriting, sample library development, mastering, etc. etc. Sonar has always been able to handle anything I threw at it.

Yeah, I don't think there's any one particular thing. I think its great strength is how comprehensive it is, straight out of the box. There's nothing much that you can't do with it, is the thing.

I like the way Sonar does freeze.  It was not the first to implement freeze but does it the way I prefer it.

Sonar has a buss pane that was revolutionary when Sonar first came out.

There are a lot of little things that Sonar does well that other DAWs don't do as well.

Taken as a whole for a very deep DAW Sonar is the simplest DAW to get things done in.

The support for external synths is as good as other DAWs that support external synths yet its support for soft synths is great too.

Now we have a DAW that supports VST VST 3 VSTi VSTi 3 DX DXi. It support ASIO, WDM and all Windows audio driver models. Its tightly integrated into Windows.

I really like how Sonar shows how it uses CPUs. Disk space and so on.

I really like the way Sonar scans plugins.

What I like: to have a pro Daw (Sonar X3) for a price which amateurs can afford.

Sonar is better geared for MIDI/composing/arranging than Pro Tools which I feel is optimized more for traditional audio recording.

All the DAWs are getting similar in features over time.
