Behringer made a what? Wireless interface/mixer??

I am not a Behringer user or fan by any means, but this http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/XR18.aspx is blowing my mind.  The Bakers should get in on this idea.  That would be the coolest as long as any such wireless hardware would be compatible (in hopes that more makers take on this technology, of course).

Kind regards,

    Looks promising:
It's scary to buy anything made by them after I had 2 pieces of gear die, A mixer and a powered speaker. But the little 12 channel XR -12 X air looks like a tempting way to re gain what I have lost in my 01V with on board effects alone.
I am using a small Yamaha mixer but having to add an outboard reverb unit just to be happy with effects. I was going to demo a  $500 TC Helicon  Voice touch just to see if the effects are better. For the $300 these units might be worth it just for effects.

I wouldn't get to excited about the DAW audio interface part.., a tour of their web site and I find no info or links to any drivers. So my guess Sonar would hate it, but Garage band, Logic or Pro Tools will work. Only the 18X units have multi channel anyhow, the 12 and 16 Channel are only stereo USB.
But for $700 a 18 channel digital mixer? I watched the video.

This one has my attention I have had GAS .. QSC Touch mix $1400 street. But if you compare features the Behringer blows it away. One thing is it only works with iPad, The Behringers have developed apps for all common OS systems, Linux, Windows, Mac, Andriod and ipad. Built in Wi Fi and hard wired LAN if Wi Fi bothers you. Now if I can control the music playback of a Tablet ( iPad?) and mix ?? Looks like I might need two tablets..

In a few years analog mixers might become collectors items.

    The future:

    Totally cable less PA systems.
We are real close aren't we.

If it works it does look promising, I'd been keen to see how it handles latency via wireless.
I dunno though I am I cable kinda guy... I haven't yet seen the point of replacing a cable that does its job perfectly, that said I am rarely doing anything much more than 3 feet from my pc so I can see how I might not be the target market :D

The wireless is for control, it's not for audio. I guess a lot of folks will make that mistake thinking it is a wireless audio connection to your PC.
Audio is output normally via XLR and TRS jacks.
The X18 has 18x18 channels over USB ( Drivers?? :(
The X16 and X12 are only 2 track ( 2x2) like most budget mixers. Which is fine, I would not buy this as an interface anyhow. But nothing to stop you from using the analog outputs into your audio interface if the USB is wonky in Sonar. To bad it doesn't have SPDIF !  That would rock.

I think I'm going to pre order the X12  for my solo and duo act mixer,,, I want the effects! And 2 aux would give me a monitor mix and a sub send like I used to have.
According to the video the effects are identical to the X32.
I can run my laptop via the USB to playback my tracks with win amp and pick up a Tablet to run the faders and mix functions. They make these Tablet holders for mike stands now. I was going to try one for lyrics anyhow,, might 3 of them!

I have been looking for an upgrade for my Quad Capture for sometime, not to replace it, just for live recording with more tracks.

Eyeing on the Studio Capture, but the price is a bit high for me.

Waiting for Behringer UMC 1820 + ADA8200 combo. At around US 400/=, good price, but the UMC 1820 is not released yet after such a long announcement.

Next the Tascam US 16x08 at even better price. And now the X18 at US 700/= and is very tempting.. add a bit and the choice goes back to Studio Capture :)

Hey, John.  Yeah, MUTO does have wireless capability, however, the interface must be connected to a computer.  The XR18 has wireless capability built-in, so it does not have to be hardwired to any device (PC, tablet, etc.).  In that respect it is a unique audio interface.  (That is, it can be used like a mixer for live performance.)

Nonetheless, I would certainly use MOTU before ever considering Behringer.  In fact, Behringer is nowhere on my list.

Ohhh i see, MOTU does allow you to use their cards without a computer, for mixing live, they even add DSP with reverb/compressor/etc, but the wireless control via Tablet/Phone is available only using a computer. Thank you for that correction!

Presonus now do rack versions of their digital mixers, 16 and 32 channel versions.

The 32, for example, will act as a 32x32 interface with a computer or run standalone with any wireless device such as iPad, tablet, Mac mini, etc, as a controller.

Like I said, I would not look at these as audio interfaces,,, that is a secondary feature and at this point I see no ASIO drivers, so until  there is some word or a download for ASIO drivers I'm not going to get exited about that one detail. They are marketing these as stage boxes, small mixers. It is the X32 in a smaller format.
I think the XR12 will be the one they sell the most. For $300 it can blow away all those cheesy little swiss army knife mixers that sell for under $400 these days. Makes them all obsolete. This is their marketing strategy, watch the video.. he points at a handful of small Behringer analog mixers and goes :" Vee don't need dees anymore,, they are kapoot!"
So it truly is a new price point and fairly new technology.
He states that they have sold millions of small analog mixers, they now plan on selling millions of these.

Hi Karyn, I looked at the RM/AI stuff before, but I didn't catch anything about wireless.  But I took a closer look and sure enough, you got me.  I am not much in favor of Presonus' hardware, but I believe it is a world above Behringer's for sure.  The hardware mixers are pretty cool, indeed.  I recall being impressed with these when first announced.  I read that Presounus just released a Dante card so that make these mixers even cooler.  But the price tag is up there.  Comparing the price of Behringer, that might say a lot more about the quality of Behringer hardware, as usual.

Several sound companies who run sound for my band use the X32 Digital Console (including one engineer who's been recently mixing for James Taylor).

It's a great piece... rock-solid, good sound, and very flexible
I liked it enough to buy the "Compact" version for my studio.
The built in USB audio interface is decent.  At ~10ms total round-trip latency (ASIO), it's solid.
I assume the new smaller "spin-off" versions are using the same technology.
If that's the case, you won't be disappointed...

iPad control works great.  Especially nice if you're in tight quarters in a club...

Thanks Jim for the first hand experience. I inquired at a store yesterday but they are not available yet. I'm willing to give the XR12 a shot for $300. If it actually works as a simple audio interface that will be useful. Mostly It will give me a playback option for live performance.

I'm still toying with returning to using midi in a live situation to control effects parameters for each song. So that require using a DAW to playback my backing tracks. Audio/MIDI.

I would have bought the XR12 outright if it was in stock, instead they are letting try out a TC Helicon voice Play. It will require hours of set up for different songs and then remembering which preset is correct while performing! It sounds good so far but I've been down that road before, sounds great at home/ sucks at the gig.

Yes I said that in #4.
It's always debatable that audio will sound much better over an interface. I've mostly just used the 1/8" line out for the last 10 years. But if I use a DAW for playback I will need ( desire) stable asio drivers. So this will be a wait and see for this product. People in music stores I was in today just draw a blank stare when you ask about the availability. They are not on the price list yet.

Yeah, thanks, Jim.  I appreciate your recommendation on the Presonus mixers.  I was reconsidering the Roland Studio Capture, but without ADAT I/O I would lose use of my existing hardware.  I will see what else Presonus is going to release and if any check all of my boxes.  Expandability is a big one as are multiple, quality preamps, I/O count and connectivity.

And thank you, Johnny.  I wouldn't consider Behringer even if they offered some unique functionality I really wanted.  I would not trust them at any price.

It's too bad the Behringer screwed up so big in the audio world, They must have a hard job now to convince all those people who got burned that they could make anything dependable. The x32 is a big hit,, but it's only been in use for a short while. MY Yamaha system is 25 years old,, so I kind trust them still..

OTOH... while Behringer fights the stain of early chinese manufacturing errors, they still keep their prices low, and their quality has gone up tremendously. Good for us!

Behringer had the unfortunate position of being first in china. Today, everybody builds there and quality is quite good, assuming your paying a rate for 'quality' manufacture. You'd be surprised - check the faders on their current crop of small mixers against Mackie, Yamaha's. Major difference in feel.

FWIW, I owned a TC Voice-Live II for about 6 months.
    • The onboard mic preamp was terrible!  Preamps in a $500 32-channel Behringer analog board blew that preamp away.  The Behringer preamps sounded fat and alive by comparison
    • The reverbs were nowhere close to what I was expecting (given the TC name/reputation).
    • The tap-tempo feature had a major bug (at least on my unit).  If you had consecutive presets that used different types of delay, the tempo would get scrambled.  Switch patches... and you'd see the blinking light flashing at like 300-BPM... and the sound was completely botched.  Had to (re)tap the tempo prior to starting every tune.
The harmony and pitch-shift EFX were cool... but my bandmates could sing harmony (well) on-the-fly.  I never used those features.

Behringer has bought/absorbed several quality companies (ie: Midas).
If you listen to the preamps on the X32, it's pretty obvious they're well designed.
Keep absorbing quality companies/technology and the folks behind those... and it's bound to make a difference.
Fender recently bought GenzBenz.  Shortly there after, they release the Rumble 500 series bass head that sounds great.

My wife and I are at a lot of live shows here in Columbus.
I'm either playing... or she's there with QFM-96.
If it's local acts, the mixer is often a X32 (Presonus and Mackie digital boards are also common).
If it's a national act, the console is usually a Midas or Venue.

Funny you should mention the Rumble. While I was in the store picking up the Voice live Play ( I took it back see * )   I was also inquiring about sub woofers. I just sold my Yorkville 200Wx 18" , way to big for my tired old bones. Small subs are like $1,000??. Being a lot smarter than I look, I asked about small bass amps, I got to try a real nice Fender Jazz fretless into the Rumble 12" Wow!!. It weighs like nothing too! What have they got hidden in that thing?  I will pick one up later once I've paid off this last round of GASing up.

And don't knock the idea of using a bass amp for a small sub.. think about it. What is a small sub? A power amp and a heavy duty speaker. What is a bass amp.. that's right. All you do is turn the MID and Treble down voila! a pour mans hi pass filter. I speak from experience.

My plan for the future is to use a DAW , Sonar if so, for my backing track playback. This will allow a few cool things. Audio and then MIDI control of my Effects, and sending the bass track, that's right!  a real bass, to the bass amp. I've done this successfully already with split stereo wave files. It's cool, it is like having a real bass player on stage..except this one does not drool.
That is why this thread got me going in the first place. Looking at tha XR 12 brings this a little closer to reality. I could use any old interface, but as Jim just said, most interfaces have crummy pre amps. Pre amps and good effects are important to me live. I just bought a Beta 58 too.

The X32 is the best bang for the buck in digital mixers.  I would recommend it above the Studio Live mixers which are in the  same price range.  I'm obviously not going recommend it or compare it to an Allen Heath digital board, or a Yamaha, but those are 3 times or more the cost.

I realize Behringer had issues in the past, but the stuff they are coming up with now is game changing stuff.

The people scrambling right now are PreSonus, as well they should be who have developed products that look great on paper, but are problematic, difficult to use, and offer little to no support.  Behringer is constantly updating firmware, and bug fixes.  Presonus outsources all their software engineering, so once they've released a couple of patches they never offer software updates.

I've had an XR18 digital mixer running with Sonar for several months now as an 18x18 USB interface on ASIO driver.  For the most part I absolutely love it.  There are some instances where I see a little difference in behavior from Sonar while it's been in the place of my RME, but those seem to be on projects with a mix of 64 and 32 bit plugs, so it's hard to attribute 100% to the interface.

I did go from PCIe to USB 2, which really may not even be a real factor for my lightweight use, but it did give me pause.  The GUI interface, which just got an update today BTW, is gorgeous and intuitive, as it's just like a live mixer.  I've got four independent stereo effects busses and compression on each channel as desired for monitoring.  I can run headphones and three stereo monitors off it, and it interfaces MIDI to my Kurzweil.  It also does some kind of ethernet P16 monitoring, which I've not even looked at yet, but I understand adds lots of monitoring flexibility with some add on devices.  Then I can gig with it, which really is it's primary function, and for that it's just incredible.

At home and gigging I have it hardwired to an ethernet switch with simultaneous control from whatever it sees on the network including IPAD control VIA WIFI provided by the LAN.  I've not used the internal WAP on it as I prefer keeping a wire on it.  I see the IPAD control as icing on the cake and not required since you can control from the computer.  But it has worked great and I'm happy I got it.  Almost sent it back because I initially thought it was controlled *only* from the IPAD.  Then realized I could run it over ethernet from the computer, then I saw the interface and realized the power it had, so I kept it.  The preamps sound meaty, it's responsive, the processing sounds great, today's update looks fantastic, hence I've decided shared my experience.  They've not put out an updated ASIO driver since the first one, so I hope that's approaching soon.

There's a fantastic X-Air group over on Facebook that has tons of really good information and video tutorials that demonstrate all the box is capable of, so you can really get a thorough tour of it.  Much like the vibe here, its a very friendly and well informed group with users from everywhere.  My only quibble was going to USB2 from PCIe, which is likely negligible for my use, and now I can use it on my desktop and notebook and anything I may get in the future.  As I mentioned, I almost sent mine back before truly realizing all it could do, plus direct PC control via Ethernet with nice GUI...my nine year old daughter can run it.  And I've never had 16 pre's in my life, except for my Mackie CR 1604 mixer back in the 90's...don't even know yet what to do with that many.  So that, plus tracking with monitored compression, limiting, gating, FX, dadadadada...I'm enjoying it.

I will add here also that the ASIO4ALL driver is doing way better than the Behringer driver.  I know there's better, but even with my seven year old hardware listed below, I'm getting 10 ms round trip, which I'm happy with.  And it's only pushing hard when I put CPU hungry plug in on the master bus.  In this case Ozone 6...makes a big difference on the CPU when on or off.  I'd love to see it on a late model PC.
