Love it Jeff! I think this could link to another part of a "saga" as another mood in it.

A new more cinematic version of the incredible 'Heights of Zaphon' It is here under the name Zaphon Cinematic Mix 1. The other versions are all on this link too.

https://soundcloud.com/jeff-evans

What I have done here is put cinematic tom grooves in and the drums are feeling it in half time now instead. Except the end where it reverts back to its normal groove. The story starts off steady and builds as you would climb a mountain and then the race to the top. A more cinematic mix.

Here is a link to the download of the higher res wave file for those interested. It sounds better than the SoundCloud stream that is for sure. Check it out. This will only be active for a week.

well, I think there might be 3 versions of this song now?  I'm not certain from the posts.  I'm listening to "The Heights of Zaphon - Remix with Jeff Evans Unmastered"

I really like this!  love the soundscape you've produced here, very dramatic.  it definitely has an 80's hint in it with that analog synth sound.

nice job

The latest version or the Cinematic Mix is the one I think. There are three variations to this piece that Tim originally composed.

The first one I did was the remix version with the live drums at the full tempo. The ambient version is drumless and meant to be of a more dreamy nature.  The cinematic version however is a sort of half time thing with the cinematic toms involved now which changes it again.

Tim has done some new and extra parts which I have download and I am keen to check out. They have the potential to add lots of interst here and there too.

That was the biggest and hardest thing I've seen since I looked in the mirror this morning? "Both" are impressive. I like the analog synth. It would have been better with vocals.

Thanks for that. I have just changed to 'Zaphon Cinematic Mix  2'  This mix has got some nice extra refinements and bits added too.

https://soundcloud.com/jeff-evans

Tim has just done some extra parts and these really add some weight and drama in places.

He has done vocal tracks and now some now extra vocal tracks too and they are all great. I have not really worked on them but they are next in line. Some timing up tidying and pitch things and I am sure they will come up great. I have just got the vocals low in the mix right now with some long reverb on them.

I am a little worried it is starting to sound too big. There is certainly not much room for anything else!  The Cinematic version is my fave right now.

This is the direct link to the higher res wave file. This mix below is even more up to date than the mix above on SoundCloud.

I love the big drums in this most recent mix Jeff!

This has all been extremely educational for me in seeing all the different ways one can treat a mix and get different personalities from it. Jeff is a good engineer/mixer and can pull a lot of rabbits out of the hat. I'm hoping that maybe a few of the new tracks add to it a little.

Why people climb mountains like that, I'll never understand...

What's in it? "I did it?" Or perhaps "I died trying?" I just don't get it. I would find a way through a pass...

I know there are people who live for that shiz. I'm just not one of them.

I would take your lead synth? And double the speed, at least in portions. But it's only at a neg 90? So "as you were."

I have just changed up the Cinematic Mix to Version 4 now. This is the very latest mix and both Tim and myself are pretty pleased with this. It sounds great now. I have refined this quite a bit even from the last mix.

Thanks all for the comments.  Don't forget too that this link is still active:

https://www.hightail.com/download/UlRRblRpOC9UWURsZThUQw

This is a link to my Hightail Account and this is the full higher res wave file mix.  It sounds quite better than the SoundCloud stream.  It just looses the edge here and there compared to the original print.

It is still unmastered at this stage I must point out.  It has only reached a very high level of Pre Mastered state. I am not sweating mastering as yet as I am still changing the mix on this in parts but I must admit it has settled down to what it is now though.

Hey, Tim, I really hear this as a TV track.  It's a nice job and a good tune.  I wish I had the patience to set up my midi but I don't even get up here as much as I like.  You did a nice job on this.

I just listened to this..... very nice..

So there's 3 versions?  That's cool.  This might be worth trying to place with a film/tv library since you do have 3 versions, that makes it more usable. I could picture this as underscore in a movie..... opening or closing credits.

Well done.

Re: The Heights Of Zaphon 2014/11/19 18:57:29 (permalink)
Here is a very new mix of 'Zaphon' the cinematic version:

https://www.hightail.com/...UlRRblRpOC9UWURsZThUQw

After going to a live Tangerine Dream concert and also listening to their latest CD I started comparing my previous mix to the Tangerine sound and I could hear problems in my previopus mix as well.  There were things about their mix I wanted to achive in this. Although yes they are quite different, what is similar is the number of layers and the density of things going on.

I feel this is a good thing, listening to quality reference material while you are mixing and mastering.  It can make a very big difference.  This is mix is much closer to what I have been hearing in my head for a while now and I feel I have nailed this one a bit more.  This is the best mix for me.

Lots of changes in this, pushing the drums a little harder too!  Dynamics changes,  EQ changes,  reverb changes etc..  Balance of things in general.  Dropped a few things out here and there, added a shaker part in too.  It gives it a little more momentum.

Hope you are still enjoying it out there

And all of them including this one at my SoundCloud site. This is the Cinematic Mix 5 on Soundcloud:

Re: The Heights Of Zaphon- REMASTERED WITH JEFF EVANS- Producer extrordinaire. 2014/11/26 15:39:33 (permalink)
Hi Lynn. Thanks for the kind words but I would not use that mix as a reference mix for most things, perhaps only a big epic instrumental track only though.  It is not a typial mix by any means and most of my mixes are not like that either.  It took 12 attempts to get that one right too!

Interesting that I remixed that after seeing Tangerine Dream live and also their latest CD's. The thing that Tangerine Dream seem to get right is the music is layered, complex and deep yet everything is in its place and all the layers are balanced correctly.  Because I was so close to them in the live small theatre gig I could hear they really back off the effects too.  I did the same and pulled some reverbs and delays and things right back.

Danny thinks my snare reverb is a bit toppy and he could be right. That could be a bit of ear fatigue creeping in not sure. I might go back and review that.

Another great reason why you should listen to reference tracks during the mixing and mastering stages of your productions. It was alomost by accident for me. I had Zaphon on my system and Tangerine Dream playing in my CD player and when I switched between the two I could just hear the differnces and thought man I am going to have one more crack at this mix and see if I can get it more Tangerine Dream like in some areas.

Musically what Tim and I have done and Tangerine Dream are quite different but the similarity is in the bigness and depth of the track.

Hey through me Tim has also discovered Tangerine Dream. I am pleased for him. The only thing is they have over 135 albums now!!!!

LOL!  Jeff, you may be right.  I typically use Steely Dan, Crowded House, and U2 for the style of music I play, but if I should start scoring Hollywood epics, this will be on my list.

I use Steely Dan a lot too and for a lot of things.  Especially setting up and tuning live PA's into rooms etc.  For me however the best two Steely Dan albums by far are the last two.  'Two Against Nature' and 'Everything Must Go'

These are all digital things from start to end and they sound fabulous.  Better than their vinyl recordings in my opinion.  Those mixes are just stellar to say the least.  I love the way they are mastered too.  Perfect balance of dynamics, punch and loudness.  I use that as a master reference as well.

Great mix, very uplifting tune and brilliant synth work keeping them all balanced, well spread and individual. Love the lift-off start and enjoyed the musical journey - good job!

I used this track as trance music as I was working and drinking coffee this morning.  Sounded nice.  Interesting pieces.

Voda La Void...experiments in disturbing frequencies...
